Tech vs Union & RPI on the road

    USCHO picks for this weekend
    Clarkson at Union
The game of the night in the ECAC as the Golden Knights have been one of the hottest teams in the nation while the Dutchmen are very strong inside the conference. If there’s a game Clarkson may slip up it might be against Union. If the Dutchmen want to pull the upset they will need contribution from the bottom-six. Clarkson wins.

    Clarkson at RPI
This is the quintessential trap game for the Golden Knights coming off a big game against Union. Even if Clarkson doesn’t play their best hockey, they have enough depth and goaltending to squeak by if it’s an one goal game Clarkson wins.

    Lets go Tech!!!!

To be fair, Clarkson did play a game 10 days ago. Hopefully they can suffocate Union and RPI the same way they did Canisius. Unfortunately, no video tonight unless you want to give Union $9.95.

St. Cloud State lost again tonight. Clarkson is now up to #2 in the Pairwise and will likely follow in the human polls if they can take care of business tomorrow against RPI.

Also, has the NCHC forgotten what defense is? The loser in all three games tonight reached at least five goals, including an 11–7 final. I wonder if the brief warm spell made them think it's lacrosse season.

The RPI margin right now is tiny, so the results of the games still going on in Alaska might change this fact, but Clarkson has eked ahead of Notre Dame in the RPI and, consequently, the PairWise. The result is that Clarkson is, at least for a couple hours, the nation's #1 team.

This was the worst game this team has played all year. The passing, especially in our d zone, and the break out, looked more like the 2015-2016 CU team, and nothing like we saw throughout the entire first half. So many passes / dumps to no one ... it looked like we were desperately trying to clear the puck flailing away - anyway. Kielly, and the goal post, prevented Union from getting what they deserved, as their play was significantly better for almost the entire first 50 minutes.

This may be ok for tonight, but next weekend, we will need a much better game vs. the Donato clan.

Very thankful for a W...that is all.

Listening to the radio broadcast of the game from Florida was not quite as exciting as being at Cheel Arena, but thank you to Mike Vallancourt for allowing us to hear what the Clarkson Golden Knights have done this season......this is a lengthy unbeaten streak for the Golden Knights in ECAC action. We used to attend those games in Troy and in Schnectady, but this season, we are in a warmer place....for a few more weeks.

Here are our heroes and their helpers for the Union game:

Fortunately, Devin Brosseau scored before the end of the first minute of the first period, giving Clarkson a joyous one goal lead. Devin's helpers were Nico Sturm and Kelly Summers. Unfortunately, Union, on a power play, scored their first (and their last) goal of the knight.

Then with only a minute and a few seconds remaining in Period 1, freshman Jere Astren scored Clarkson's game-winning goal with assists from Tyko Karjalainen, his linemate also from Finland, and freshman Kevin Charyszyn, Period 1 ended with a 2 ~ 1 Clarkson lead.

Period 2 came and went without any scoring. Union played rather well during this period, and thankfully had no goals to match their effort.

Period 3 was devastating for Union.....try as they might....they could not score any more goals. But the Golden Knights capitalized on their ability to score. In the sixth minute of this period, Aaron Thow scored Clarkson's third goal, and Sheldon Rempal and Greg Moro earned the assists. At this point, the score was Clarkson 3....Union....zero.

To insure that Union couldn't win this game, freshman Jake Jacomb drove the black bullet into the Union net for Clarkson's fourth goal. His assistants were Harold Egle and Josh Dickinson.

As stingy as possible once again, Jake Kielly stopped 32 Union shots on goal out of the 33 the Dutchmen took. The last I looked, Jake possesses a save percentage of 1.35, which may be a bit lower after this weekend. Unfortunately, the Golden Knights allowed Union one power play goal, and they were unable to score on any of their own five power plays.

It was nice to see that Cornell and Yale tied their game, giving Cornell only one point in the standings. This morning the Golden Knights are undefeated in ECAC play, are alone in first place, and lead second-place Cornell by three points. Having previously defeated Cornell in Ithaca, it will be a huge game when Cornell comes to Cheel next month.

WE ARE PROUD OF OUR KNIGHTS.

Those of you who have been at Cheel Arena have undoubtedly viewed a marvelous sign near the train whistle; it reads "Lord Stanley's Clarkson Golden Knights." Today it is appropriate to mention this as it seems to provide a great description of this year's hockey team. They are for sure playing like they are serious contenders for being one of the best teams in the NCCA. I was as surprised as anyone to see Clarkson's freshman goaltender, Nicholas Latinovich, replacing Jake Keilly last knight at the Houston Field House. Jake had been given the knight off after playing in 21 consecutive games. Mike Vallancourt named Nicholas the Golden Knight of the Knight, as he stopped all 21 of RPI's shots on goal.....a very impressive shutout win for this young man.

Here are our heroes and their helpers:

    1. I don't think Kelly Summers realized that his goal in the twelvth minute of Period 1 would be Clarkson's game-winning goal, but it was. Sheldon Rempal and Devin Brosseau added the assists. The score at the end of Period 1 was Clarkson...1 RPI...zero.

    2. As no one scored a single goal in Period 2, Nico Sturm decided to change that fact during Period 3. Half-way through Period 3, Nico scored his eighth goal of the season, with Sheldon Rempal and Terrance Amorosa earning the assists. The score was at that point, Clarkson...2...RPI....zero.

    3. Apparently Nico decided it was fun to score goals, so in the final minute of play in Period 3, he again added to Clarkson's score. Aaron Thow earned the assist. The final score was Clarkson...3 and RPI....still wondering why they could not score a goal in this game.

Congratulations to the best team in the ECAC....your fans are very proud of your accomplishments. After playing ten ECAC games, the Golden Knights have won every single one of them....no losses and no ties. This team can't possibly be any better than having a perfect 100% average. No matter what happens, this team somehow, with all their talent and determination, simply finds a way to win.

CLARKSON'S GOLDEN KNIGHTS KNOW NO LIMITS.

Congratulations to Nicholas Latinovich on his first collegiate victory and shutout. It's not easy to be the backup to the best goaltender in the country and remain game ready. Your fans and your team appreciate your hard work every day!
