View Full Version : Have the Knights Ever Visited Your Town?

Many of you have moved out of the North Country since you graduated. As you know, Clarkson just took a road trip to my 'new' hometown of Colorado Springs to play the CC Tigers; every year, they take a road trip out of Potsdam to a non-conference team anywhere in the country.

How many of you have had the Knights pay a visit to a non-ECAC team near you? If so, how long ago was it and how did they fare?

I was able to see them last year when they came out here to play Northern Michigan and the Knights won both games.

I was also able to see them play in the original "Ice Breaker"
in Madison, Wisconsin and I stayed at the same motel as the team and I enjoyed it but the Knights did not do well at all.

THe nearest the Knights get to DC is the annual visit to Princeton.

I'd love to see a college tournament at the MCI center. There are enough college hockey fans down here (I can think of 4 -- Vic, Jim Love, Ralph Baer, and myself :) that the building would have about 13K seats filled.

Joe, I'll be doing the annual pre game event at Princeton this year...Sat Feb 2....you MUST come!!!!

I'll have a block of tix too...so I can add you to the email list before then if u like.

College pucks should and will return to MSG before MCI....but with the "management" of the ECAC doing it....dont hold your breath! :D

Can't make it this year. DeMatha HS is at the Gilmour Academy tournament in Cleveland.

The closest college to my home here in Savoy, MA (pop. 727) is UMass - Amherst. I've been waiting for the Knights to play there as we do go to a couple of Minutemen games each year and would love the 45 minute drive to see them. Were not too far from RPI and Union and go there each year.
My wife, myself and my 2 year old son traveled all the way to Orono for the Ice-Breaker this year. The games were not so good but we had fun meeting the other fans. All 30 or so of them.

This is an interesting topic because Clarkson seems very set in their ways when it comes to NC games here in the East. UML and UNH are staples now that BU and BC will no longer travel to the North Country. But not much else new other than the occasional Mercyhurst or Q visit to Potsdam. While that generates some extra revenue (no return trip commitment) it does Clarkson no good at all in terms of institutional publicity.

While Clarkson is well known near the venues it frequents often, as an institution it is NOT well known outside those areas. In CT, hockey fans in the New Haven area know Clarkson well due to Yale. When they came to Quinnipiac, which is next door to New Haven, they drew very well (the Fire Marshall had to look the other way). But outside the New Haven area Clarkson is pretty much a non-entity. When Chris Clark was Captain and the Knights were playing with a first round bye in Worcester (I think), I could not interest the local papers in doing a story on him. Clarkson just has no visibility in this area.

As soon as they feel it would not hurt them too much in the PWR, the Knights should play some of the MAAC teams in southern New England to show the flag and gain publicity. Bring the band too. Believe me, it would pay dividends in the long run.

Curious ... why will BU/BC no longer make the North Country trip?

And welcome to the Roundtable!

Great to have you as part of the Roundtable

Is the reason BU/BC avoid us due to the PWR, money, or both?

RichS is probably better equipped to answer this, but my understanding is that BU and BC hate losing in the North Country after a long ride. It's as simple as that.

How'd you guys like UML, btw? Pretty impressive team, are they not? Clarkson must have done pretty well to stay with them.

Btw, how do I get this thing to display the last post on top?

Unfortunately, there's no way to do this on a per-user basis. It's set system wide; I've changed it to last-post-first to be more consistent with USCHO's message board (which uses the same software we do)

I will look into patching and/or upgrading the software to see if this can be done per-user.

Thanks much, Scott. I have at times wished that the display was just the opposite too. But best to make it consistent with USCHO.

The arrangement with BC?BU playing vs Tech was largely the result of Jerry York's relationship with Billy O' whom he knew very well, obviously. Having NEVER beaten Tech since he has been at BC, it was no surprise that Yorkie did not re-up the arrangement. I believe it would have continued were Billy still at Clarkson. And of course, BU comes along with BC...and Slu got to ride on the coattails of our arrangement! :D

That said, I don't see anything wrong with us rotating our games against HE foes...we sure picked a hot pair this year! Besides, think of this...if we can play Merrimack some year soon....the almighty Mike M will actually get to see Cheel first hand!

Whoopee! If Mike makes it up to Cheel...can Al D be far behind? Oh God...perish the thought! :D

MikeM is a really good guy and a pioneer from the HOCKEY-L days. We should not lump him in with certain other folks.

A Merrimack and UMA pairing for the trip would be quite interesting.

Dick, by and large i agree with you. No comparison between he and that other guy!

But he comes off as a bit too authoritative for my tastes at times. His half hearted complimenting of Cheel (actually his disbelief that it is a terrific facility), when he really has never seen it by his own admission, and his claim that Todd White had little Eastern support for the Hobey in '97 are two good examples.

Love to have any HE teams visit...we need to kick their butts!

Hey, I know they're not a great team, but they are one of the Knight's former ECAC opponents...not to mention the fact that there are a lot of alumni down here in Southern New York. Army now plays at Tate Rink in the Christl Arena, which is a very beautiful complex in historic West Point.

Army still plays D-I and is now back in a conference. We usually get to see games against UML, Colgate and Cornell. It would be nice to see the Knights come down for a visit.

It's not a really bad ride for me, but if I have to walk into that RIP Fieldhouse one more time just to see the Knights play, I'm going to be sick.

I agree that Tate is a nice rink...what you can do with taxpayer money eh? But I'd be shocked to see Tech play there again anytime soon...I think I saw the last visit there more than ten years ago.

Gee, when did you see Cornell play there...recently?? I dont recall that. I may be able to get to West Point before the season ends.
