we will need a new goalie next year with Mattson and Walsh getting to the end of their collegiate careers. The team will also be losing significant offense and defense after this season as well.

Also, they pick up two defensemen. That is all the recruiting information I see at this point. Any comments?

goalie sounds good. Seems like we are gonna need some big time scorers with Poapst, O'flaherty and Evans leaving. where do you get the recruiting info from?

O'Flaherty is only a junior. Up front we lose Poapst, Evans, Garceau and Line so we will be needing some help at the forward posiition. You can get the recruiting info for all the teams at Chris Heisenbergs site:

http://members.aol.com/cheisenber/Recruit02.htm

He has lists for each teams recruits that is updated every couple of days. In addition, after the team lists he has the recruits for all the various US and Canadien leagues listed. If I interpret these lists correctly he has the kids listed in terms of how good they are. Don't know how the rating are done. Good, the defenseman is right at the top of the list for Ontario, Breckelmans is the first defenseman listed for the WOJHL and Traylen is the first goalie listed for his league. On paper this recruiting class is starting off really great. Now we need at least 2 top flight forwards to replace those leaving.

At the end of each league section, he also has links to the various leagues and teams. That is where you can go to follow the stats of these kids throughout the year.

Guys,

This past weekend when I was at Tech I spoke briefly with a couple of the coaches and they are very excited about all three recruits.

Traylen will come next year but not play...but at least he will have a chance to acclimate himself to the environment and learn from the two seniors.

One of the D men I was told...I forget which one...is a really hitter with a bit of a nasty streak it seems. That sounds good to me!

Sorry, we didn't get around to talking about forwards. But the cupboard is hardly bare...we know what McFeeters can do, and Blight is the real deal...I was very impressed with his game last weekend, his nose for the puck and good sense around the net. And Lush is really playing well with the increased icetime he's getting.

The recruits seem really powerful. I know the numbers can really mean anything, and to see them in action would be so much better...but Traylen's numbers are impressive. I can not find any other recruiting information. vicb pointed out the same page that I get my info from and I just learned about it two days ago. There has to be some additional information somewhere.

Looking at the recruiting page today, it is now listed that Dustin Traylen will be inelligible (Major Junior) until September 2003. This goes right in line with what Stemmer has commented on. I was not checking up on you Stemmer, but I saw in a Maine thread on USCHO that a goalie...oh here...

MAINE GETS A NEW GOALIE

FYI, Maine has gotten a commitment from goalie James Howard of the USNTDP. He chose from BU, Maine, Michigan St., Ohio St. and Clarkson

I guess we were sizing up a couple of goalies for next year? Any inside information in this one Stemmer? It would be appreciated.

None at the moment but I'll get back to ya Earl! I do know the coaches are very high on Traylen!

I'm excited about the hitter. We need a couple of big guys on D, not necessarily thugs, but people to instill fear in the other team to make them think twice.

Big D are nice, I was one once, a long long time ago, but I digress.
What Tech really needs is some pure scorers. They need a couple guys with the golden touch, legitimate big time threats every single game. Don't get me wrong we have some excellent forwards, but we need a Todd White style player, or a Craig Conroy, or another Dave Taylor (I wish). They need to start putting away their chances. You can play great D, but it is irrelevant if you don't score, and the D get a little fustrated over time when their is no offensive support. A power offense can go a long way in improving a defense.

True, a gifted scorer is needed. Evans has proven not to be one, like Saper, Turgeon, and a few others from whom much was expected. I do think Blight can be a big time scorer however. He impressed me with his touch, sense around the net, and shot.

As for the guys Pete mentioned, Taylor was not so much a pure shooter as a hard working all around player who was very tough, smart, and had great hands. Most of his NHL goals travelled less than 10 feet! I saw Dave play as a freshman and I have never to this day seen a harder working player at the college level!

I would say Marco T. and Patrice Robitaille were more gifted scorers than the others mentioned...lets not forget Hugo Belanger!...and White was cut from the Taylor "work ethic" mold!

Going without a go-to guy is tough! But we have a less than 100% McFeeters and miss Desrochers also! I think the scoring will pick up...it has to!!

:D

I didn't mean in my last post that *ALL* we needed was a big D man. We also need someone on offense that can finish. It's a pretty big hole. It's what I noticed first when I saw them play at Northeastern last week. There were lots of shots, and good set ups, but there wasn't anyone to finish. It's a shame. Sorry for putting up a lousy, incomplete post, guys :)

Petal,

Not to worry...we got your message! If Jones develops as he should and these 2 can step right in next year, we'll have a fine D with Bahen and Reid as seniors...Carosa too.

Will you be at the games this weekend? I was hoping to make the trip but opted for the Yale/Prin games at Cheel instead. I was at Bright last year for a thriller! Nice barn for hockey!

Keep us posted!

Thanks!

Rich, You brought up a few names I should have mentioned. Clarskon has had a few guys over the year with a nose for the net.
Taylor and White are my favorite type of player. They are a threat BECAUSE they work so hard. Some guys have the talent naturally, but I love the guys who bust thier ass and score a lot.

That is something that I like about this Clarkson team. There may not be a big time scorer, but they are all hard workers (at least they appear to be). If you could throw a sniper on a couple of those lines with the players who could dig the puck out of the corners and feed it to them, they would be deadly.

Petal, I didn't mean to sound like I was taking a shot at you. It was a good post, I just meant to address what I saw as a present and future problem that stood out to me. Sorry if I offended you, didn't mean to.

You are right about the scoring Rich, it has to get better, it certainly can't go down much further right now.

I can't wait to the games back at Cheel next week, haven't missed one in 7 years.

Yes, I'll be at the Harvard game tonight, barring any unforseen circumstances. It'll be interesting though-I had to move this morning, then make a B-line for work, going to be here til 4 I reckon, then head to the game. I am really looking forward to seeing some old friends, and meeting new people. Definitely looking forward to the post-game outing. Been a while since I've been incoherent, if you know what I mean ;) I will watch the team closely and post what I see/don't see, probably tomorrow afternoon I reckon. Take care, all. LGT!!! woooo!

Pete, no offense taken!!!! :) Sometimes I just don't think properly, and end up leaving too much out of my posts. You know, like an incomplete thought. I'll try to do better, okay? ;) No worries!!!

Just curious where the post game gathering is being held? Last year it was at John Harvard's and I was able to make the game as I was doing some consulting up in MAss. at the time. That game was a thriller!

I recall Huskins, E-T, Desrochers and McFeeters playing particularly well! And a few key stops by Walsh in the 3rd!

LETS GO TECH!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D

Okay here's my report from last night. It was like it was a different team out there compared to the Northeastern game. They were hitting hard and often and generally being a lot more aggressive. Dave Reid got burned big time on Harvard's first goal. At the end of the 3rd, you could kind of feel it was coming. Harvard was really turning it up. Very disappointing. Mike Walsh was giving up rebounds, and that made me nervous. But, he played well last night and made several amazing saves. Sometimes they would be playing quite smoothly, working together, and other times it seemed like there was a bit of confusion or lack of on-ice leadership in setting up scoring opps. Not sure how else to describe it. If I think of anything else, I'll put it up. In summary, a better effort last night than previously. Would be nice to rack up a 4 point weekend though......Good job, Techers!

Stemmer,

Any new information on recruits? I still see the same information on the recruits page and was wondering of any new developments.

Thanks for any information.

Great news Joe! Say, why don't you email Mark about your son? Or send hima tape if you think he has D1 potential!

BTW, did you see Jeff Halpern play when he was a kid down there?

Stemmer

To show you how old I am, I reffed games played by Jeff Halpern as a Squirt and Jeremy Roenick as a PeeWee.

It is a little known fact, but JR started his hockey career in Maryland, first playing for Howard County and then the Washington Metros AAA Pee Wee team.

My partner tossed JR for mouthing off.

As to red light, college is a long way off. The next step is a Prep School somewhere in NE. But cripes!!! Those schools cost more than college!!! Next yr I'll have 1 in college and 1 (maybe) at Prep and one in private HS. Plus, I think my daughter will be getting married.

Call me broke...... :)

Joe,

I'm Tech '74 so I'm older than you! :D

With all that expense staring you in the face, all the more reason to have the Tech coaches keep an eye on your son!

Or if you want a completely "unbiased" opinion, send me a tape and I'll take a look...I've coached a few "sieves" in my day...yeah it was years ago but I still "know" all the moves I kearned from watching Eddie Giacomin as a Ranger.

Can I still execute them?

Hell NO!!!! :D

Given the yo-yo that has recently gone on with the goalies at Clarkson, why would somebody want to play at CCT?

One would think that a stable situation would be better when trying to recruit a goaltender.

On a side note -- can a hockey player play lacrosse at a Div 1/Div 3 school???

Joe,
Sure they can. Both Steve Warr, 2 time AA at Tech, and Jerry Kemp, who was at least All ECAC I think, played lacrosse at Tech in the early 70s...had played previously in the Peterborough, Ontario area. I'm not up on what guys may have alos played lacrosse in recent years.

As for the goalie situation...I'm more than a little tired of this. As I posted on USCHO, no one questioned the handling of Murphy when he played like an AA in his first 3 seasons. Only in his senior year, and in the years since when the goaltending has been erratic, and guys have been pulled when it was appropriate, has the questionning come up. I was a goalie and I knew damn well when I played poorly....and was not at all surprised or hurt when I got yanked!

The crease is no place to be if you are so sensitive to being benched. I'm not suggesting anything about your son but while different coaches have different methods of handling their netminders, lets be honest...except for Walsh's hot streak last year, has any Tech goalie EARNED the right to not be pulled when he has a bad game or two...or a horrendous period giving up a couple of softies in the past 3 years?

The fact that this highly rated Traylen kid has opted for Tech says a LOT MORE to me than the naysayers from slu and cornell who feel compelled to trash our coaching staff!
