There was a clip about Craig in this weekend's paper...

Strange bedfellows
Calgary's Craig Conroy recently reflected on having former Panther Dave Lowry as a roomie.

"I'm with Dave Lowry and thinking he's a great roommate," Conroy said. "He throws me the remote because he's going to sleep but says it's OK if I want to watch TV. No more than a minute later, he's not only asleep but is snoring so loud I can't even think, never mind watch TV.

"I'm sitting there and can't believe a guy can fall asleep that fast and also start snoring that loud right away."

Craig notched a nice PP goal last night in the 2-1 over Vancouver. Clarkie was stoned on a shorthanded breakaway.

Some comments on the full face shield

And Craig Conroy, one of the Flames heart-and-soul players who usually is on the first line with captain Jarome Iginla, was badly cut in his mouth during second period Sunday after taking Vancouver goaltender Johan Hedberg's stick in the face.
Conroy returned to the game with a full-face shield, and couldn't even say Monday how many stitches he received.
"I'm not even sure - I've got them all over the place. They just cut putting them in."

Maybe he got the cuts from shaving?

For those of you who didn't see it, Craig scored goals #2 & 3 in Calgary's 4-3 OT win in the Shark tank. Both shots were outstanding "sniper type" goals one from the left circle high on Nabakov's short side and one from just inside the blueline just under the cross bar. Now that the face mask & jaw protector is off, he's really producing like the sniper he was for us years ago... love to watch he and Clarkie doing their thing. Congrats to the Flames -- keep it up!!!!

He and Iginla are an absolutely sick pairing, especially with Gelinas as the third on that line. It seems like every time they come out on the ice, somebody ends up making a ridiculous pass or a rush up the boards or something, and a lot of times these little things end up in quality scoring chances. A lot of credit has been given to the Nieminen-Nilson-Donovan line for what they've been able to do, but part of what's making their job easier is that Calgary's first line is playing like it should, and in doing so is absorbing the brunt of the defensive effort. The fact that Craiger, Iginla, and Gelinas are +10, +10 and +9 respectively says that they're getting it done at the other end of the ice as well.

Pretty much every time Craiger gets a point, Barry Melrose makes it a point to mention his name as somebody that should be on Team USA for the World Cup :D

From THN's article First Quarter Report, under SURPRISE PLAYERS, page 17.

CRAIG CONROY A defensive specialist, you say? Not really. With 11 goals and 24 points in 21 games, Conroy was on pace for career-highs in goals (43) and points (94). In case you're wondering, Controy has not sacrificed his defense to improve on the eight goals and 47 points he scored for Calgary two years ago. He was plus-11 for the Kings.

Good to see Craig getting some positive attention. Sure, its a small blurb, but what the hey. Can't help wondering a bit if the surge in scoring has to a lot to do with the "new" NHL, but I guess the same would hold true for everyone.

Stemmer
12-03-2005, 05:50 PM
Anyone thinking Craiger is only a def specialist should talk to Jarome Iginla or read the comments the latter made during his huge year a few seasons back. Craig was his center that year and Iginla credited him as a huge factor in his scoring accomplishments.

He got in one awesome open ice body check, along with several other good checks and played a solid game overall -- had a good scoring chance on the backhand in the third for a gwg, but didn't - score that is. Hope he and they do better tomorrow!!!

Well sure, that's because Doc Emerick is strictly a Devils "homer" so those are the only names he knows.

All kidding aside, maybe he has Craiger confused with Chris Clark. There was a story/interview a few years ago in which it was pointed out how there were so many similarities between the two...the "C.C", they wore the same uni # at Tech, etc.

I know Craiger must be really jacked up to play in the Olympics; h ewas disappointed to not be selected 4 years ago. Count on him to be one of the leaders of this team.

From yesterday's Hockey Notes in the Boston Globe:

Despite all the chatter last week that the Senators had imminent plans to move veteran Daniel Alfredsson, the classy Swedish winger remains in Ottawa. Much of the focus the last two seasons has shifted to Jason Spezza and Dany Heatley, and captain Alfredsson has long been the poster boy for Ottawa's postseason failures, even though goaltending has been the perennial undoing. No doubt the Alfredsson rumors will persist, however, and it might do him well -- emotionally and statistically -- to be away from the Spezza-Heatley kiddie korps. Los Angeles was the rumored taker last week, a deal that could bring veteran center Craig Conroy to the Senators. Such a deal would be a huge money-saver for Ottawa, which went into this season on the hook for $14 million in Alfredsson the next three seasons, while Conroy is due less than $5 million through 2007-08.

Bill
11-06-2006, 03:25 PM
Joe: I doubt if Sens are ever going to save much money on an Alfredsson trade - any takers would surely make Ottawa eat half his remaining salary at least (except maybe the Islanders)!!!:D
It would be great to see Craiger playing back home, though.

Wow, did Craiger ever look happy to be back in Calgary. Scored the first and last goals toknight in Flames 4-1 win over the Kings - he was fired up! Afterwards, grinning from ear to ear, skated into the Hound and gave him a huge hug. I imagine they interviewed him after the game, but Directv cut it off - guess they must pay Rogers by the second or something. Anyway, great to see Craig back in Calgary, fired up again and playing well.

Those cable/satellite packages that show games are not allowed to show anything much past the actual end of the game. Has nothing to do with what they are paid. They are pretty much limited to the actual game broadcast. Even teams with pre-game shows that start a half hour ahead, those aren't shown either.

Yeah, I know they aren't allowed to, but a lot of the time they'll just leave it on for a good while after - especially the FSN carried games - I guess they figure you can just switch back to the FSN station anyway, so why be in a hurry. Not so with the feeds from Canadian TV - they generally cut'em right after the game ends.

Probably same way he did when he played for him at St Louis as he first began to emerge as a solid NHL player

Stemmer

I recall when Keenan was signed to coach the Rangers. One writer referred to him as the "Billy Martin of the NHL," i.e., he's " a 2 year manager with a 3 year contract."

That has proven to be an accurate assessment. Keenan succeeded in New York (for one year) because he had great veteran leadership on that team and because they got the players for him in mid-season trades that he demanded (Larmer, Noonan, Matteau, MacTavish). As he has done everywhere he's been, he burned his bridges and alienated management and players.

What he did during his stint in St. Louis set that franchise back a few years. His relationship with his some of his players was not as positive as the previous post would make it seem.

Don't be shocked if Craiger plays less than a full season in Calgary this coming year.

Not a bad Knight for the third line - Craiger has bounced around on all the lines this year, and is still playing pretty well.

Craiger played his usual solid game last night at MSG. He assisted on the Flames last goal late in the 3rd.

Too bad the Rangers didn't show up, they were as lifeless as they were in MTL when they stunk out the Bell Centre (is it still called that?).

I had four passes to meet Craig after the game, that was two more than I needed so gave the other two to a Calgary fan who was there visiting NYC with her three daughters. They had their Flames jerseys on and the Mom's was a "Conroy" jersey from his first stay with Calg when he wore #22 and the "C." Why he had to give up 22 and take #24 in deferring to Langkow escapes me since Darren L is much Craiger's junior as an NHL player.

Quite a Clarkson contingent there to see Carig after the game. Hockey alums were Ted Cline and Charlie Meitner who live fairly close to NYC. Also our guy Bob Ahlfeld. We caught up while waiting for Craig.

The woman who had my extra passes took a photo of myself and my friend with Craig. He didnt even object to my wearing my Rangers' (Giacomin) jersey. :D

I told him he came very very close to being a Ranger two years ago just before LA sent him back to Calg. A Ranger broadcaster told me that summer that Sather "really wanted him" but that LA demanded too much.

Too bad because that year the Rangers needed a third line, two way center. And he has always played well on Broadway, in fact he reminded me how much he still misses Mike Richter because he "owned" him. True, he always seemed to score on Richter incl his first NHL goal in early '95 in the strike-shortened season.

He asked "where is Richter now? We replied in unison, "at Yale!"

If you have a chance to meet Craig at an NHL arena near you, do it. He's great with Clarkson alumni. and is still the same boyish, talkative "kid" as when he was a rookie.

900 games sounds like a lot, but I note that Iron Mike has him up on the 1st line quite a bit lately - also out for critical faceoffs and PK's as usual. Great to see him still playing well.

Keenan is more commonly known as "Mad Mike", a monikor he richly deserves since his days at SLU and which he embellished in his only year on Broadway..

Know a former linemate of his there who is a current AD at a North Jersey HS who told me, "it was NO FUN playing on his line. He'd be all over you if you didn't do something his way!' Sounds like the same Keenan we know and love today.

Kudos to Craiger for still going strong and being a great Techer too. Always a treat to see him at Reunion in July.

Anyone catch the fight between Craiger and Gagne in the battle of Alberta last knight? Experience vs youth - and experience won - he landed about
4 before Gagne even knew what happened, Craig got Gagne's helmet off and smacked him a good one just before losing his balance - Craig the clear winner - Gagne had a pretty good red welt on the side of his face as he sat in the box, and Craig smiled all the way to the box..... and, oh yeah, Calgary won the game.
I don't recall ever seeing Craig fight before - must have, but first one I've ever seen.

I say Craig won that one clean. It might be good he lost his balance. Isn't there a new rule about fights right off the whistle though? I don't follow NHL too much, but I thought I remember hearing that.

Craig closed out 2009 by potting his first of the season on New Years' Eve.

Way to go Craig! Just wish he had made the Olympic team but that was a long shot.

STILL TICKING

Calgary's ageless wonder, centre Craig Conroy, will play a 15th NHL season after agreeing to a one-year contract with the Flames.

Conroy needs just nine games to reach the 1000-game plateau. He had three goals and 12 assists in 63 games a season ago.

The 38-year-old, in his second tour of duty with the Flames, has 180 goals and 360 assists in 991 career games.

1000 articles out there today on Craig's accomplishment. I thought this short article was one of the best -

Great picture too, although a bit dated - still has #22.

Didn't he wear a C on the 22 jersey for a bit? I'd like one of those!

Yeah, he was the captain for some time the last time he was in Calgary, I think.

Wasting time at work watching Don Cherry clips and came across this about Craig.
