Randy Jones gathered an assist and also got a deflection goal in a rookie game against the Islanders.

from the link
Later in the period, Philadelphia took a two-goal lead on a beautiful power play goal. Randy Jones and Patrick Sharp played catch with the puck inside the blue line before Sharp sent a cross-ice pass to Joni Pitkanen in the near side faceoff circle. Pitkanen ripped a low one-timer past the Islanders goaltender to make it 3-1.

Jones scored a goal of his own later in the period when his centering pass from the far side deflected in off of an Islanders’ skate to make it 4-1.

He got sent down the next day to the Phantoms....hope to see him crack the Flyers lineup in the future. It will be tough with a number of young Flyer d-men (Pitkanen,Woywitka Vandermeer, Seidenberg)
Great start! (http://www.philadelphiaflyers.com/pressbox/archive/1142.asp)

Here is some Flyer's fan comments on Randy's play during the first scrimmage

) Defenseman Randy Jones. He was the 3rd most impressive defenseman after Pitkanen and Woywitka. He was aggressive (good size), and showed good puck instincts. He seems to know when to "go" and when to "stay back". He handles the puck very well.

Edit: Apparently he got rocked by Brashaer as well....

"Jones has excellent puck-sense (when he is not being hit by Brashear). Jones seems to have good ice vision and passes very well. "

still real early in the season (3games)...but a good sign

· Randy Jones is first among all rookies and tied for first among all defensemen in plus-minus (+3). He's played in 2 of the 3 games and has one assist.

After gathering two more assists in his next game, he has sat the last two games.....the coach likes to mix up the d-men pairings. Normally, Freddy "Hack" Meyer (BU) plays when Randy doesn't .:p

Unfortunately, Jones is out with a "head injury" (he left during Saturday's Philly/Hershey game). No details have been given, but most of us Phantoms fans believe it's a concussion...

I never thought to check the Orange & Black boards...primarily because most Flyers' fans don't give a rat's a** about what happens with the Phantoms.

I really hope injuries don't become a problem for Randy. He had a bad back a few weeks ago, and now this.

BTW, I guess the USCHO folk were right...Meyer IS a hack! :D

I agree about the O&B board, generally nothing is on there regarding the Phantoms. Keep us updated Stripes!

I listened to the game on the web last night and the announcers for the opposition (Hersey) were very complimentary towards Randy. They said "What a tremendous find for Philadelphia. Randy Jones was signed as a free agent and hails out of Clarkson University. This yound lad is going to be seeing a lot of ice time."

I noticed on the game sheet that Randy also had 5 shots on net

Did you hear if he was injured again?....

from the article

Jones has a goal and six assists vs. the Bears, but he suffered what seemed to be a serious right leg injury late in the third period.

I'll see what I can find out about his injury. He was helped off the ice but was able to walk to the dressing room on his own. Apparently he caught an edge in a rut on the ice and twisted his knee.

It can't be anything too serious as he is at practice this morning and participating in all the drills.

Well, it's actually Friday night...but since the Knights aren't playing, why not stop by the Onondaga County War Memorial if you're in CNY (I'll be there; I'm visiting my folks this weekend).

See Randy now before Bobby Clarke trades HIM away, too - probably to somewhere out west (he loves to do that).

Thanks Stripe for the correction. Busy day at work and had just been talking with someone from Coburg, Ontario where Randy had played his Junior hockey. They mentioned they had purchased 50 tickets and had a bus load going to Toronto to watch him play on Thursday night. I guess that's where the Thursday came from.

Randy scored his 3rd of the season in a 4-0 W against the Hershey Bears. He now has 16pts in 28gp and a +5 rating.

Jones widened the gap to 3-0 at 7:22 of the first stanza. On the play, Mark Murphy went on a 2-on-1 rush with Craig Berube and found Jones trailing the play. The rookie defenseman skated across the crease and backhanded a shot past Budaj. P.J. Stock also set up Jones’ third of the year.

Randy scored a goal and added an assist (18pts in 30gp) in a 4-1 win over Norfolk. That is good for 2nd on the team (edit: amongst d-men), next to Seidenberg (19pts in 33gp)He's also quickly moving up the depth chart due to his play and injuries to Seidenberg and Desgardins. Now let's hope GM Clarke doesn't trade him for immediate help on the Flyers.

Randy tallied a PP goal in the Phantoms 3-2 win over Springfield (LeNeveu was the tender). He now has 19pts in 33 games to lead the Phantoms d-men in scoring, and place himself amongst the AHL rookie leaders.

Randy Jones is tied for fourth among rookies in assists (20) and tied for 17th in points (26). Among defensemen, he is tied for 13th in assists and tied for 16th in points.

Freddy the hack Meyer was recently called up to the Flyers (sent back down on 02/25). Not sure why Randy wasn't called up instead.

Could it be the +12 for Meyer, and the -3 for Randy?

For the third time this year due to injuries, Randy gets the call up. I believe he played against the Rangers on Saturday. Looks like he may make the playoff roster as well!

“I’m looking forward to playing with [Markov],” said Jones. “I’m just going to try to keep my game simple, and I’m sure he’ll help me out a lot. “Any time you get called up and get a chance to play with these types of players it’s really exciting. I’m just going to make sure I come focused and ready to play.”

Another option on the blue line could be Sami Kapanen, who was forced into defensive duty during the same game as Jones made his debut. Kapanen, the consummate team player, is ready to do whatever is asked of him.

“We think that long term this gives us a chance to really look and Randy and see if he can help us in the playoffs here. We might need him,” said Hitchcock. “We’re going to use him for the next few games and see how he looks.

Therefore, Hitchcock says Phantoms defenseman Randy Jones will probably stick with the big club for the playoffs, meaning Dennis Seidenberg would be with the Phantoms whenever his recovering broken leg will allow him to start skating again.

Since they have lost 2 in a row (awful Rangers and Islanders), I'm sure that the pressure is on Randy to perform. Fans are ready for Clarke's head. No goaltender again for the playoff run!

Edit: btw, Randy is #6 now.

At tonight's final regular season home game for the Phantoms, Randy was presented with the team's "Rookie of the Year" award.

Given the he's the top defensive prospect in the system, I'll still wager that Clarke will trade him away over the summer to get yet another washed-up veteran...

Paul Holmgren comments on Flyers D-men prospects. With Clarkes trades last year, lack of draft picks this year, and Randy's surprising (to the Flyers) play he has moved up significantly

Holmgren listed defensemen Dennis Seidenberg and Randy Jones as the Flyers' top two defense prospects, followed by Rosario Ruggeri (12 goals, 48 points for Chicoutimi of the Quebec League) and Stephen Wood (11 goals, 29 points for Providence College in Hockey East). He slotted recently-signed R.J. Umberger as one of the team's top power forward prospects.

Hockey's Future Flyers Prospect Report (http://hockeysfuture.com/article.php?sid=7592&mode=threaded&order=0)

10. (16) Randy Jones, Defenseman, 6.5 B

Very quietly, Jones is establishing himself as a quality NHL prospect in a Flyers system that is sorely limited in defensive depth. The organization is very high on the former Clarkson University standout, a free agent signing two offseasons ago who has provided the Phantoms with rock solid defense and steady offensive production from the blueline since turning pro.

Jones, who was named the team’s Player of the Month for January, rarely earns rave reviews, primarily because he is not a standout-type player. He is not flashy and, at times, appears to play with little emotion or urgency. He does, however, play a strong positional game, makes consistently wise decisions with and without the puck, and provides the team with an offensive option, via his rushing ability and accurate shot from the point.

Perhaps most impressively, Jones not only limits his own mistakes, but has shown a remarkable propensity for recovery and an ability to make up for his teammates’ miscues. He will never be a top four defenseman in the NHL, but could ultimately thrive in a 5-6 or 7-slot role. The Flyers will give the 23-year-old a serious look in that regard at their next training camp.

Defenceman Randy Jones was scratched with a closed head injury and forward Ryan Ready was injured following a knee-to-knee hit by Chicago forward Stephen Weiss.

Jones was replaced in the lineup by Alexandre Picard, a third round pick of the Philadelphia Flyers in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft, who signed an amateur tryout contract (ATO) earlier in the day.

Jones' status is still day-to-day
