I am not able to listen to the Clarkson game tonight :-( , however......
some news on a past Clarkson hockey player:

Cole is playing awesome in his game against NY rangers. The commentators said Cole against the Rangers has been a dominating force. He's taken penalties, making passes, and creating scoring opportunities. or something near to that....
1 goal and 1 assist in 2 periods!

E was the #1 star in that game, I'll see him here at MSG next week!

Just for laughs ;)
Cole got a picture taken of one of the Hanson brothers (from Slap Shot) wearing his jersey last weekend at Potsdam State University. The paper said that he will put it in his locker.

Wow, what a first half for Erik!

With tonights goal, he now has more goals (26) than Jerome Iginla and more points (54) than Teemu Selanne and Mike Modano. In fact, he is tied for 13th in the NHL in goals scored.

He has scored at least a point in 13 of the canes last 15 games.

Keep it up Erik! Make Clarkson (and oswego!) proud in Torino!

Bad News...

http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/recap;_ylt=AmQfEkdxD3umGoEbIgjh2ml7vLYF?gid=200603 0416&prov=ap

Cole scored two goals for the second night in a row before getting hurt in the third period, and the Hurricanes chased both Pittsburgh goalies in a 7-5 victory over the Penguins on Saturday night.

Cole left the ice in visible pain with 14 1/2 minutes remaining, clutching his right arm, after being driven headfirst into the boards by the Penguins' Brook Orpik. Orpik drew a five-minute boarding major and a game misconduct.

Not sure how serious it is yet...Hopefully not very, but it sounds like a very cheap shot.

Erik Cole: (Vertebra) Could Return Late in Playoffs
RotoWire.com Staff - RotoWire.com
Monday, April 17, 2006

Update: Hurricanes GM Jim Rutherford believes that Cole (fractured vertebra) may be able to return to action if the team goes deep into the playoffs, according to an interview in the Raleigh News & Observer.

Recommendation: "Deep" in this case probably means at least the conference finals. Rutherford was careful to emphasize that Cole's availability will be decided by physicians, not the coaching staff: "From a team point of view, we will not push him."

Can he bring it to Clarkson without touching it?

I haven't decided if I'm going to touch (the Stanley Cup) or not," Cole said. "Just because the league rule or the league minimum allows me to, believe it or not, I don't think whatever the league rules are, are necessarily what's right or what's wrong."

If the Hurricanes do win, Cole's name would be engraved on the Cup because he has played the required 41 games in the regular season.

"In my opinion, championships are won in the spring," Cole said. "I've been through a long playoff run and I know how hard it is and I know how much these guys have done to get to this point. But now being a part of it, it's tough to justify.

"I've been talking to some of the guys and been wavering back and forth.

"It's just tough when you don't play a game in the spring."

As to the superstition of never touching it until you win it, they had a picture of Ray Whitney holding the cup many years ago when he was an Edmonton stickboy. I guess it only applies once you are in the league, 'cause it's beginning to look like he's gonna get to touch it again. Too bad they were never this competitive when we were in CT with Hartford tix!

You may get a chance to see Erik play tonight.

No idea on the validity of the source, but newzjunky.com posted this on their site:

Tipster: Expect to see Erik Cole playing tonight in Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Finals 8 p.m. tonight on WSTM. "Don't forget to watch the game, the arena will go crazy when they see him."

Ron
06-14-2006, 11:32 AM
I take anything without a true source (especially when it's just tossed up on NewzJunky) with a grain of salt.

That being said, he's past his target date, been skating for three weeks, and I think that Laviolette is smart enough to use this to his advantage, either emotional or strategic. If he does come out onto the ice, he'll hit it last, he'll be starting and then he'll sit the bench the rest of this game, or he'll be out there for 10-12 minutes zipping around... Would be nice!

Game 5, Canes win the cup. Erik Plays. With the Remains of a Hurricane soaking the area....Could anything be more storybook?

If that plays out...I have the luck. I have been to 2 other Canes games. 1) Eriks first hat trick against Atlanta and 2) A 2nd round (i think) playoff matchup against Montreal a couple years ago.

Man, I hope he is correct. Nothing would be better than to see Erik hoist the cup tonight.

MikeR

Coach reaffirms that Cole will not play.
There aren't expected to be any lineup changes for the Hurricanes, who brought in Josef Vasicek for Game 4. There had been talk that Erik Cole might be able to play a game in the series, but Laviolette spoke with Cole on the way back from Edmonton Monday night and put a quick end to that notion.

Laviolette comments from today...

"This is not a broken finger or a broken ankle where, if it breaks again, you just have surgery to reset it," Laviolette said. "This is a broken neck. And nobody feels worse than me or his teammates to see him out there (in practice). He looks so good and he looks like he could come into the lineup tonight and contribute, but the bottom line is that his vertebrae and his neck is not 100 per cent healed and if there is only a .1 per cent chance that he could re-injure it, that's enough for me.

"His life with his family and his future and his career are far too valuable for that. It's just not worth the risk."

He must be ready, or they wouldn't have taken the chance. Erik played like the Erik of old -- he really did some banging in the first period, so he must be well healed. not really. if doug weight was not hurt theres NO way he'd be playing right now.

They are taking a risk because of a key injury to someone else.

And, yes, there was a clearance but i bet you can go to enough dr's around the world till you find one who will tell you what you want to hear.

Nah, They received clearance from the same guy that held him out previously, and this was a couple weeks past his targetted return. I think if you didn't see him in game six, you would've seen him in game seven regardless. I'm sure Doug Weight's injury made the decision significantly easier.

You don't risk someone's life because someone else got injured, you call someone up from the minors, because you're allowed to do that in the NHL during the finals, unless you have someone more capable and game-ready, which Erik obviously is.

Well, my three-year-old son and I made it to today's celebration in Oswego. If I had to guess, there were about 1000 people at Fort Ontario this morning to see the Erik and The Cup. Unfortunately, with heightened security at airports, the Cup's arrival from was delayed in customs for a couple of hours. From what I understand, it had less to do with the actual Cup and more to do with the NHL camera crew accompanying it. Because of the delay, the autograph session was cancelled. :(

Cole arrived just before 1 (three hours after things were supposed to kick off) in a red Thunderbird convertable, holding the Cup overhead. After arrival, he spoke briefly. From what I could hear (I was in the middle of a huge line of people), he apologized for the delay and thanked a whole bunch of people for coming.

The cup was then put on display for photographs. My son (who had been remarkably patient with the wait and made several new friends) and I ended up leaving at this point, since the line was several hundered people long. I decided not to push my luck and call it a day.

A good turn out today. The delay and the cancellation of the autograph session were disappointing but understandable, given the circumstances. Once Erik and the Cup finally arrived, everyone seemed to have a good time.

Erik scored Carolina's second goal against the Sabres toknight on a beautiful (and purposeful) deflection over Miller. He also played his usual strong game and showed no signs of past injury or unwillingness to bang. It was great to see him back and playing at 100%. Unfortunately, no Hurricane (including Erik going last), scored against Miller in the SO, so Sabres win 3-2.

Cole netted a hat trick last night against Chris Clarks' Capitals. It was his first multi-goal game since he broke his neck. Coincidentally his last multi-goal game was that night he got injured.

Anybody know anything more about Cole's injury last night against the B's?

"Carolina won for the third time in nine games and took three of four in the season series against the Bruins.

Hurricanes left wing Erik Cole had to be helped off the ice with a lower body injury at 8:46 of the second period and didn't return. Last year, Cole missed the final 22 regular-season games and the first 23 playoff contests. He returned for the last two games of the Stanley Cup finals for the Hurricanes and has 49 points this season." -From SI.com-

Cole tried to cut in front of Murray as the big Bruins veteran carried the puck up the boards in front of the Hurricanes' bench. It looked like the kind of play that would have injured Murray if anyone, but Cole collapsed on the ice, grasping at his right hip. He laid there a few minutes before two trainers hoisted him up and got him to the dressing room.

Coach Peter Laviolette, who earlier in the day made note of the fact his team was finally healthy, was awaiting X-ray results after the game and talking "lower body injury."
Until Evgeni Malkin showed up in Pittsburgh, Cole was the closest thing in the NHL to Cam Neely. A freight-train skater with a creative knack for finding the net, Cole was instrumental in the Hurricanes' 2005-06 run to the Stanley Cup.

He had just returned from inury -
Hurricanes forward Erik Cole started alongside linemates Rod Brind'Amour and Ray Whitney after missing Tuesday's game with a lower body bruise.

I was at the game. Glad it was just a hip injury, we couldn't tell from our seats for awhile if he was ok. He was down for about 3-4 minutes and the way he hit the boards I worried it was upperbody / head.

Did he play?

I tuned in just in time to see the shootout. He wasn't in it, and the bad guys won:( .

Chuck,

I watched the 2nd and 3rd periods after getting back from Potsdam and I didn't hear Cole's name mentioned. However, watching is an inappropriate distortion of the facts... I turned on the TV and fell asleep as I had to be at work Sunday evening.

Erik did, however, play last Knight. The guy on SportsCenter mentioned his name and of course that he was from Oswego. I'm going to call up Brian Kenny and have him bribe the SC announcers and have them say Cole is from Clarkson, lol.

Yes he played bugt being that it was only his 2nd game back, his minutes were not up to his normal level. He looked very good.

Not sure if he'd have taken part in the SO normally because Carolina has many snipers. But only two shot because Jagr won it in round two for the GOOD guys. :D

We can settle the "good guy/bad guy" thing in Albany. ;)

Rich, my hope for any Clarkson player when they play the Rangers is as follows:

"Erik Cole registered a hat trick this evening, but it still wasn't enough as the Rangers beat the Hurricanes 4-3." :)

Fire,

I can live with that! A couple of years ago, Todd White got two against the Rangers when I was there but the good guys won.

Going further back, Colin Patterson, who is part of an answer to a good trivia question, got TWO SHORTIES in one game at MSG but alas, the Sabres won that one.

Speaking of Whitey, here was a funny site. A fe wyears ago, we were talking to him after the game vs the Sens and there he was, all 5 ft 7 of him standing next to teammate Zdeno (Lurch) Chara at what...6 ft 9? :)

Just heard on the NHL Network, that the CT scan was clear. Expected to be on the flight to Tampa.

ESPN reported this morning that he was released from the hospital. Given his history of neck injury, I'm sure they will be more than cautious. My thoughts will be with our fellow Golden Knight today.

Passed on a chance to steal 'E"?

Not smart. No way is Havlat the complete player that Cole is.
