POTSDAM – The Clarkson University chapter of the fraternity Tau Epsilon Phi has changed its name to Lambda Phi Epsilon while a dispute it and other chapters have with the fraternity’s national organization is sorted out.

It's not really correct that we changed our name. We have always been Lambda Phi Epsilon (well since 1966 when our founders changed from Psi Delta Psi shortly after founding the fraternity). We simply aligned ourselves with the TEP national and adopted their name, while keeping ours as our chapter name.

The TEP national is a huge mess right now and there are a couple of people that want to keep it that way; a cash cow for the executive director and his son for doing little to no work. They have gone from several hundred chapters in 1993 when I pledged, to 40 just 5 years ago, to 20-something with only 3 listed as "good standing" at this date. There is a push amongst the chapters to change this, but until they can actually hold a meeting (which is being held up due to the chapters not in "good standing"), there will be no change.

Meanwhile, Clarkson's Lambda Phi Epsilon Fraternity is alive and well. Despite some missteps earlier this decade, the brotherhood has remained strong, consistently achieving academic performance above the all men's and all fraternity average, and is involved in several community projects. The current brothers have shown their commitment to the brotherhood and improving and are currently a "dry" house. The alumni association is also backing LPE in their efforts and after a long battle with TEP National, the alumni association now officially owns our house on Sissonville Road.
