Toknights game is certainly a MUST WIN. Cannot afford another tie or loss. It was nice to see us dominate last knight for so much of the game. Unfortunately we could not get the damn puck in the net once again. LGT LGT LGT

Anyone have a score update? Last I saw on USA Today site, it was 2-0 Tech, but there is usually a long delay.... :(

I snuck a peek at the USCHO board -- RPI had a 1:43 of PP going into OT? What happened?

I watched the game on TV while in the ECAC chat room. As the announcers said, Clarkson was in complete control of the game when they got a 5 min PP in the third period.

Then things went to heck in a handbasket faster than you can say Jack Parker.

They stopped playing. Plain and simple. What had worked well for 50 min was abandoned for a sit back game and RPI took advantage of some breaks and buried the puck.

The late 3rd pd. power play was (another!!!) dumb penalty by Clarkson for elbowing in the offensive zone. I don't know what is going on, but the discipline is not there. We had to take roughly 4 what I would consider really dumb penalties.

The game tying goal was a nice one timer from about 45 feet by Cavosie that Walsh never saw and never had a chance on. While some of his save may be called lucky, he was hung out to dry in the final period.

The game winner was a 4x4 goal that the RPI forward split the D and roofed a blue darter from about 20 feet out.

Tech was not defeated tonight. They lost.

If the team (and I) were coming off an emotional high after last week's Yale game, they now have an real emotional bummer to recover from.

Now for some positives. The forecheck. When it was working, it was devastating. Why the Knights stop forechecking at times is beyond me. Keep it going and they will win a lot of games.

The power play. I liked it. It had good pressure and had a couple of glorious opps that just missed.

The D. It is quick, but does seem to commit a gaffe or two that leads to opponents' scoring chances.

The bad. Lack of emotional control. The "Right Stuff" had a great line "maintain an even strain". We are too mercurical. Need to level off the peaks and valleys.

Consistency: Why can't we play 60 min of hard hockey? We should have BURIED RPI. We let up in the 3rd and lost a very winnable game.

I, unfortunately, was at the game tonight. First game I've been to since graduating last May.

We definitely dominated the first 2 periods. But as the third went on you could tell we weren't playing to win anymore. Typical Clarkson 3rd period when having the lead, we let the opponent back in the game.

I can't comment on the penalties because I had bad seats to see them. There was a call against us in the last minute of regulation which probably should not have been called because it didn't affect the play (at least not from my vantage point).

The game winning goal started as 2 on 2 rush and one of the Clarkson defensemen fell down allowing the opponent to step right in and have a clear shot at Walsh. It looked like he picked the top corner. One of the previous goals resulted from a giveaway deep in our zone, I believe it was a clearing attempt up the middle of the ice from right next to the goalie (which is a hockey sin!).

After the game, Walsh skated to the side of the rink and just bent over in disgust/disappointment....Whatever word you want to use, it looked like this one might stick with him for awhile. Haven't seen a player react like that unless it was a championshio game or something of that magnitude. Although, I wouldn't place any blame on his shoulders, he made some good saves in the first 2 periods and the shots that beat him were quality shots.

To summarize, we should have one this one going away, RPI started playing their typical dirty style when losing in the 3rd. BUT THEN, one bad giveaway results in a goal and the flood gates opened. They rolled over us the last 10 mins. We played to win for 50 mins and then we played not to lose for the rest.

Next games will be important to see how they bounce back. It seems that this a relatively young team and this is the type of game that can really set them back. Lets hope thats not the case.

A terrible loss!

Thanks guys for the detailed posts. Hosting a simulcast site is a lot of fun...thats about 10 years for me now...but I always miss most of the first period at least!

Saw the first two goals on replay and not much else of the first period. Looked like we could have added more than one in the second but RIP also missed some good chances so you had to be happy up 3 going into the third. Even up 3-2 with just 4 min left, I never imagined we'd blow it!

But when you play passively against talented forwards like RIP has...Murley, Cavosie, Butterwick...and start backing in on your goalie...well, this is what you get! It was like playing the prevent D in pro football!

The D on the game winner was atrocious...the last two RIP goals were on the PP, right? Oh, the late call on Poapst for charging or boarding was a good call. He charged directly at the opposing player and was nowhere near the puck!

Amazing we could get 2 PPGs...and still lose! I couldn't fault Walsh too much...I'd blame the lack of discipline, our season long problem, for the loss.

We have 6 games to get straightened out...including one at Cornell....ooooooh boy!

Lets GO GUYS!!!!

Stemmer,
RPI's game tying goal was at even strength with Marsters pulled. The winning goal was scored one second after RPI's power play ended.

I've been following Clarkson Hockey for almost 30 years now and that has to rank right up there as one of top 2 most devestating defeats I can think of. The only one I think that beats this one is the 1977 ECAC semi-final in the Basten Gahden against BU when we had them 6-4 with about 5 minutes left in the game. BU gets 3 goals in the last 5 minutes to win the game 7-6.

Well the team can either fold its tent or learn from this and come out with some fire next weekend against Hahvad and Brown. Hahvad, if we are not careful, is capable of doing the exact same thing that RIP did last knight and Brown will be anything but a pushover. Keep the chins up guys.

From the USCHO article I understand Coach Morris was not available after last knights game and had the team get immediately on the bus. Ouch. I'd really hate to be in your skates this week in practice  .

Vic,

I can recall other losses that were more painful...but probably not as shocking! That was a complete meltdown in the 3rd.

I guess I thoufgt of the tying goal as a PPG because the RIP net was empty. And the game winner occured before our returning player could get back in the play. Might as well have been a power play still.

How many more "learning" opportunities does this team need? How many can we stand? :D Answer: NONE!!! By now they have to know that the game is 60 minutes long...not 50...and with our poor PK, dumb penalties are verboten!

Somehow I'm still hopeful we'll play a great game at cornell on 2/23. Not looking past next weekend but a win at Lynah would send a strong message.

Boy, I bet Morris is going to be skating the boys this week. Maybe he should have started upon their return to campus last night. Give em a nice early skate to enforce how unnacceptable last night was.

That being said, I hope the players regroup and come back strong (I'm sure they will :) ), this cannot happen again this year. I do not want to see this program shut out of Lake Placid two years in a row.
