Boy, I bet Potsdam is looking pretty good right now.
Best of luck to Shawn though. He's a good kid from a good family and although I hated to see him go, I wish him the best.

I have been checking Shawn's statistics with Binghamton; he has played in seven out of ten games, and I didn't read any information indicating Shawn had even scored a single goal or earned an assist.
When he signed a contract with the Ottawa Senators last spring, I had such high expectations for Shawn, even thinking there might be a remote possibility for him to stay in Ottawa with the Senators, but instead he was sent to the Binghamton, NY Senators. Now he has been relegated to the Elmira Jackals of the ECHL. What a shame.
I honestly originally felt Shawn would complete this his senior year at Clarkson University. He was so very well liked by the CU students, and Shawn enjoyed excellent camaraderie with his Clarkson teammates...especially with his closest friends, Steve Zalewski and David Leggio. I will never forget each post-goal celebration they had on the ice whenever Steve or Shawn scored a goal. As they approached David Leggio, one of them would skate towards David on one knee and the next one would jump upwards a bit when he met David. It was so cool to watch this performance, which was not as well received by the opponents as it was by delighted Clarkson fans.
We hope things start to turn around for you, Shawn, and we wish you good luck in Elmira. It goes without saying that we miss having you as a Golden Knight.

He was there for 'one' day. Elmira is like an hour away from Binghamton. Binghamton was off that day sent him there so he could get some more ice time on a day off.
Shawn was assigned to Elmira today.

Drew,
I appreciate your letting us know about Shawn Weller's transfer.
Does anyone know if the team in Elmira and the team in Binghamton, NY, are associated with one another and with the Ottawa Senators?
We were over in Massena today and just happened to met Jay LaTulippe's grandmother, who lives in a nearby community. She told us that Jay was now playing in Odessa, TX, for the Jackalopes (spelling?). She mentioned how often Jay was on the road, traveling around and living out of a suitcase....but he was very happy playing hockey.

From the BSens blog "Sharp on the Sens":
Rookie wing Shawn Weller and defenseman Tomas Kudelka remain with the Jackals. We'll have more on the status of all four after practice Tuesday.

Does not look good for Weller - came back to Binghamton and was a healthy scratch and then got sent down again the next Sunday. Maybe they're trying to isolate him from frustrating losses........

Some assessment notes from the B-Sens coach:
"Real good outside speed," coach Cory Clouston said. "Big strong guy. He skates well. Has a real good shot. ... He's just got to keep things simple. He's got to learn to stop and start more, and not let his speed and momentum carry him away from the play. He's got to learn to play a little bit more of a support game and support the back a little bit better."

According to the ECHL (www.echl.com) web site, Elmira's only AHL affiliation is with the Syracuse Crunch along with an NHL affiliation with the Columbus Blue Jackets. Binghamton does move a lot of players in and out of Elmira, too, so there must at least be some kind of working relationship between them.
The BSens have been shut out in their last three games. They are searching for answers, especially since they have three games in three nights this week . Hopefully Weller's stint in Elmira is a short one and he gets back to Binghamton soon.

In three games with Elmira, Weller has one assist and is -4. I did find this photo of him playing for the Jackals:

Hi Todd,
I appreciate your locating this information on Shawn Weller. To be perfectly honest, I think Shawn was more flattering attired in his green and gold Clarkson uniform.:)
I often think of the extra bonus the Golden Knights would have had this season if Shawn were still at the University. On the other hand, the transition from collegiate hockey to the next level appears to have created new challenges for Shawn. I believe it will only be a matter of time before Shawn finds himself in a more comfortable niche, either in Elmira or Binghamton. We wish Shawn Weller the very best of luck.

From an interview with head coach Cory Clouston the BSens blog:
"The other guys (including Weller), they've been going down (to Elmira) to a large extent to get some ice time and get some game time and get played in certain situations that obviously they're not getting played here."
Clouston said Tuesday morning that Weller and Kudelka would both likely stay with Elmira for "at least the next five, six games." Clouston has said previously that he'd like to see Kudelka use the time with the Jackals to become more "assertive in the defensive zone, play with a little bit more of an edge."
Asked this week about Weller, he said: "Very similar with the rest of the club, he hasn't been physical enough. He hasn't played a lot, but when he has out there, he's just got to play with more intensity. He's got to play braver. And just a lot stronger on the puck."
Sound like odd comments about the Shawn Weller we all know, but its typical stuff for moving up to the next level. The next step always gets that much tougher.

We see the same thing with a lot of freshman. Many struggle out of the gate. Then in a game it sort of all falls into place and BOOM! they're the impact player the coaches saw in Junior.

We saw the same thing here with Shawn as a freshman. He didn't exactly light up the ECAC that year.

Shawn has started looking more comfortable at the AHL level since his last callup from Elmira.
He is skating hard and is getting more ice time. It doesn't hurt that there have been as number of injuries on Binghamton and some callups to Ottawa.

Here is the article from the Binghamton Press& Sun-Bulletin:
http://www.pressconnects.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080119/SPORTS01/801190336/1003/SPORTS
Weller continues to emerge as a bright spot from this recent rash of injuries and call-ups. After seeing time with the ECHL's Elmira Jackals during the first half of the season, he's capitalized on this opportunity afforded by a shorthanded B-Sens lineup, a rise that hit its peak Friday night with a goal, three assists, and by the third period, a spot on the top line.
"It's taken him a little while to figure it out, but he's done a great job of adapting his game, and knowing what his role is, and doing a very good job of playing his role," B-Sens coach Cory Clouston said of Weller, a 2004 Ottawa draft pick and a 21-year-old Glens Falls native who left Clarkson University after his junior season.
"He's a player who really complements other players, because he works hard on the forecheck, and he'll use his speed and he'll get in on the forecheck. And as long as he's doing that, he can help out whatever line he plays on."
Big turn around from what his coach said earlier this season. Good to see.

Thank you, Todd, for the information about Shawn Weller. As much as Clarkson fans and the Golden Knights miss him, we all wish him the best of luck in his professional hockey future. You may remember that Shawn started rather slowly as a freshman at CU, but by the time he had completed his junior year at the University, he had progressed enough to be considered eligible for the next level of his hockey career. Nonetheless, it was an agonizing decision for Shawn to leave Clarkson, a year before his graduation.
My personal opinion is that the Golden Knights would be doing better this season with Shawn than they are doing without him. Shawn was always a favorite among the Clarkson students, and he had many supportive fans. Evidently, Shawn's innate ability is being demonstrated to the Binghamton Senators now. I'm glad to hear how well he is doing.

Article in Wednesday's Press & Sun Bulletin (Binghamton newspaper) says that Weller has been seeing time on the B-Sens top scoring line recently due to some callups by Ottawa.
This is a great opportunity for Shawn, as the B-Sens are in the middle of a very tight playoff races in the AHL East. The team is 4 points away from a 3-way tie for 2nd in the division.
Here's the direct quote from the paper:
"You have to make sure whoever's playing, they're doing their job. And at the same time, it's also a good chance for guys who maybe don't play in all situations to show that they're able to do that and to make a case to stay in the lineup every night."
Case in point: Shawn Weller.
The rookie forward emerged during the first half of January while such players as Bass, bois and Denis Hamel were out of the lineup. And haver seeing time with the ECHL's Elmira Jackals over the first half of the season, he is now seeing consistent time on Binghamton's top line alongside Hamel and Alexander Nikulin.
So great opportunity for Shawn, if he keeps playing well maybe we'll see him making the jump to the NHL in a year or two.

And Shawn's father was in Schenectady watching the CCT/Union game. From what his dad said, he's been getting more playing time, but still rotating around a lot on different lines. He's apparently been on the top line, the 4th line, and the 2nd line. He's getting more PK time and appears to be getting more trust from the coaches. Hopefully more good things will come.

After the Penguins grabbed a 1-0 lead just 4 minutes, 16 seconds into the opening period, Weller answered on the power play 83 seconds later, scoring off a Mattias Karlsson rebound. Binghamton had gone 0-for-10 with a man advantage in Friday's opener.
Binghamton tied it minutes later when Shawn Weller jumped on a (former Notre Dame) Dave Brown rebound in front and shot the puck into the open net.
