View Full Version : Week 3: Playing like its 1991 - LSSU Lakers

Time for the Knights to put together a solid sweep against the Lakers. Jim Roque (http://lssulakers.cstv.com/sports/m-hockey/mtt/roque_jim00.html) returns to Potsdam with a team in a rebuilding mode, predicted to finish 10th in the CCHA. A little Jekyll/Hyde maybe, with a split against OSU (0-1, 7-6), the Lakers will rely heavily on their hard work, freshman and goalkeeping throughout this season. The Lakers will be challenged if they make it a special teams dominated game, giving up 4 PPG, 2 SHG, and 1 EAG over the week-end.

Maybe Ron or Brett can get LSSU blog to at least get the Clarkson name (http://lssuhockey.blogspot.com) right.

The win and tie were good enough to move Tech up 4 places to #12 in INCH's power rankings.

Was anyone able to watch the Umass game on the web as advertised on the Clarkson site?

For whatever it is worth , We also moved up 2 spots to #15 on the USCHO poll.

Can't wait to see how we match up against LSSU.

With Roque as coach, you can bet the lakers will be an in-your-face team, not backing down from anyone. We need to keep our composure.

Discipline, boys...DISCIPLINE!

And you would imagine Roque really wants a win in his old building. Should be some very competitve hockey.

Appropriate quotes from Coach Roll regarding last week-end:

"Last year if you were to say we were going to go on the road and get three of four points we would have certainly taken it," stated George Roll. "This year we don’t have that same feeling. We want to take all four points. We played a very solid game on Friday night and I think we took a good Providence team by surprise. The following night at UMass, we certainly did not bring our "A" game. They always play us tough, but we found a way to gain the tie. As a team we were disappointed with our effort on Saturday, never mind the result. We did not play within our systems and we did not play to our expectations. If we are going to be a championship team, we can’t let those opportunities slip away. I am certainly proud, however, that we came back and found a way to tie the game up late."

On Clarkson’s forwards, Roll stated, "We have a real good balance up front. The first weekend I thought Zalewski’s line was our best line and this week Dodge’s line was certainly our best. I thought Nick (Dodge), David Cayer and Mike Sullivan not only contributed on the scoresheet, but controlled play a lot and generated plenty of chances, especially on the power play. Their play was very unselfish."

Roll remarked on David Leggio’s play in goal. "David is doing everything we need him to do right now to have success. I would not say he has been spectacular, but he has been very consistent and that is what we are going to need this year. He looks confident in net and is making the big saves when we need them. On Saturday night, he probably did not have the support he had in the first three games and he showed what he could do. He made some big saves against UMass, especially on their power play. I thought Saturday night may have been his best effort. He did an excellent job and gave us the chance to get the point."

George absolutely nailed it. No settling for poor efforts or being happy with ties against lesser opposition.

USCHO has a column written by ECAC correspondent, Brian Sullivan. Brian is the new prognosticator of weekly action in the ECAC this season.

Brian's predictions are

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 20........CLARKSON 4....LAKE STATE 2

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 21....CLARKSON 2....LAKE STATE 2 (TIE)

In my opinion, Brian's choices will be 50% correct....

Perhaps Brian is unaware of Clarkson's record at home last season, when the Golden Knights were not nearly as good as they are this season. And those poor weary travelers from Lake Superior State University, who journeyed all the way from Sault St. Marie, Michigan, BY BUS, to play at Cheel Arena.

I am also quite certain that the current head Lake State coach, Jim Roque, a former assistant with Mark Morris, was a finalist, along with Greg Drechsel and George Roll, for the Clarkson head coaching position a few years ago. I believe our chances for two victories this weekend are about 99.9%:)

MAKE THE LAKERS LOSE TWICE THIS WEEKEND.

Hey Rich, and others,

I just had to share this information with you Rich, especially. Staff members of the Integrator interviewed David Leggio and Shea Guthrie recently.

One of the questions asked was, "what is the best piece of advice that you have ever received?"

Shea replied, "Hard work beats talent when talent doesn't work hard."

David replied, "Play each game like it is your last."

One more question to relate; "what do you think of the team this season?"

They both agreed the team has a lot of potential and talent, but they still need to work hard.

OUR KNIGHTS ARE AWESOME, AND THEN SOME.

Chuck....great predictions. If Clarkson really gets rolling like they did in Providence, it could be more than five goals per game.....the more the merrier when it comes to Clarkson goal scoring.:)

Mike, the link which you provided is even better than the actual Integrator, because the picture of David and Shea is in color, whereas the Integrator we picked up at Cheel is black and white. Mike, can I correctly assume that you have been in that bowling alley in Gouverneur? Is there something very unique and special about it?

The article was fun to read, but I had no idea how to transfer it to the Roundtable, so thank you for doing that for everyone.

ON TO TWO VICTORIES THIS WEEKEND, CLARKSON GOLDEN KNIGHTS.

The morning after.....is not a good one. We literally had a snowstorm last night on our way to the game in Potsdam, but the roads were clear by the time we arrived back home. The storm definitely affected the attendance.

There is not a lot of good news regarding last knight's game against the Lakers. Coach Roll felt there were some discouraging things which occurred. Primarily, the nine penalties we took and the selfishness of some of our hockey players. George was pleased with the way the Golden Knights played during the first nine minutes of the game though.

From my perspective, LSSU is a very sizable team, and they played pretty disciplined hockey....much better than anyone anticipated they would. They are rated number ten out of twelve teams in the CCHA division. One key factor was their senior goaltender, who made some extraordinary saves. But perhaps, their good knight of hockey was merely a flute......we will see what happens toknight. Clarkson had been unbeaten in its last ten games at Cheel Arena, so that may have been one reason why there was so much optimism about the Golden Knights doing well against the Lakers.

With expectations that ......

OUR KNIGHTS WILL BE AWESOME TOKNIGHT.

Bad PK aside, LSSU's goalie absolutely stole that game for them. There were at least 4 or 5 occasions where we *had* an open net to shoot at or a pure 1v1 on him, and somehow he always managed to come up with the amazing saves. He was absolutely on fire, and really frustrated the Clarkson offense, killing any momentum they might have had later in the game. Then again, if you go 5-for-8 on the power play, it's kind of hard to lose. Coach Roll's post-game comments were interesting, as he said the first 10 minutes of the first period was the best hockey we played so far this year, and I totally agree. 13 first period shots, most of them within those 10 minutes, and we just couldn't grab the lead. Frustration... it sucks, but you need to get past it and keep playing hard, and our guys didn't seem to do that.

Hi Drew, and cheers to you too.

The post-game gathering was subdued to say the least. There was not much to be happy about regarding this game. It was a game that both Jim Roque and George Roll wanted badly to win. I did not see anyone wearing the hardest worker hat. Maybe it was stolen by the LSSU goaltender, senior Jeff Jakaitis, and worn around Potsdam.

Sadly, the LSSU overwhelming and decisive victory probably boosted their confidence level higher than it has been in a long while:mad:

Defenseman Michael Grenzy is still suffering from that shoulder injury suffered at U-Mass Amherst last Saturday, and Michael disappointingly watched the game from the stands. His experience and presence on the ice was solely missed last knight.

KNOW NO LIMITS, CLARKSON GOLDEN KNIGHTS

I'm sick with the loss last Knight. It was a poor display of Knight hockey. Hopefully the Knights come out with some controlled fire tonight and defeat the Lakers......on top of it - RPI defeats Denver. I can't even force myself to go over to the USCHO board.:o

Well, that one was more like it. Hopefully this is the type of work we will see for the rest of the season. Move your feet, drive to the net and good things happen.

The good:

Outshooting LSSU 53-23
Goals: Zalewski (2), Weller (2), D'Alvise, Cayer, Beca
Good game by McNulty in the nets.
Penalty kill was on toknight. Killed Two 5 Min Majors in the 1st period.
Good Power Play toknight.

The not so good:

The Penalty Kill had to be used way too often
Tuttle and Paquet getting 5 min majors for hits from behind.

These two weekend games against Lake Superior State University were truly like knight and day opposites. By the end of the game Saturday, the Pep Band and the CU students were chanting, "Lake Inferior State", just to add a little more excitement to an already aroused fan base. I hope we can retain, for the duration of the season, the GOLDEN team which showed up at Cheel Arena Saturday knight. Remarkably, they faced the same goalie, Jeff Jakaitus, again, but Jeff only lasted about thirty minutes before being replaced by a freshman. There was no stopping this determined group of Golden Knights. Well, technically, there was just one person stopping our team....his name, none other than the infamous referee John Murphy. I thought he had been banned forever from the ECAC, but Mr. Evil is back to continually create commotion and controversy for the Golden Knights. He will never stop making negligent and naughty calls against Clarkson.

Well. now to identify our goal scorers and their helpers.

1. Matt Beca, with an assist from Max Kolu

2. Steve Zalewski, with help from Matt Beca

3. David Cayer, with assists from Nick Dodge and Tyrell Mason

4. Shawn Weller, with help from Matt Beca and Shea Guthrie

5. Steve Zalewski, with the assist going to Shawn Weller

6. Chris D'Alvise, with help from Brodie Rutherglen

7. Shawn Weller, with assists from Tyrell Mason and Chris D'Alvise

Of course, we cannot forget to mention Kyle McNulty's outstanding performance in goal. Kyle played extremely well, allowing only one five on three power play goal.

What an impressive turnaround for the Golden Knights. This is the way they must continue to play every single knight in order to attain the goals they have set for themselves. The CU defensive corps was stingy, allowing LSSU only 23 shots on goal, while our offense shot 53 times.

WE ARE PROUD OF OUR GOLDEN KNIGHTS.

Well while Mr Murphy was being Mr Murphy, according to Josh and Bob on the broadcast they thought he actually called a pretty decent game overall. Paquets 5 min DQ was maybe questionable but Tuttles was not.

It is easy to comprehend why Tony Collins was chosen as the Clarkson University President. In addition to other reasons, he is such a people-oriented gentleman, often in attendance at the games and at the post-game gatherings in the Barben Rooms. President Collins personally greets and compliments as many Golden Knights as possible after each game. Can you imagine what an honor this must be for the Golden Knights to be personally acknowledged for their hockey skills by the president of their university?

We obviously have a most generous Board of Trustees at Clarkson University. I think they even provided the funding for the new President's House on campus. Their munificence is heart-warming. They all must share a deep devotion to Clarkson University.

Some sections of Cheel Arena are quieter than others. But with the support provided by the Pep Band and the vast increase in the number of CU students in attendance, Cheel Arena this year is much more intimidating to our opponents. I am very impressed with the students who support the Golden Knights. Attending games is almost like a ritual for them. It is entertaining to watch them all having such a great time. Last knight there were some CU students who were shirtless. Each one of them had a letter on his chest, and as they stood together, they spelled CLARKSON.

The dismaying performance of the Golden Knights on Friday has been overshadowed by the awesome display of talent on Saturday knight. It was one of the best games this group has played.

OUR KNIGHTS ARE AWESOME, AND THEN SOME.

good news for the pep band!

random thoughts....

Can we please get the video streaming right? Before this year, the only thing alumni had was the radio broadcast...now it's a tease to watch the game LIVE, only to be frustrated by the 1frame/min video display. Sorry to rant, but staying in the garage is not worth it! Besides, it is starting to get cold outside, and I'll need to add a space heater to my college hockey expenses!

CHN comment that is encouraging, although this year can be "THE" year as well... - "And word of warning to college hockey: Only one of Clarkson's top 11 current scorers is a senior."

Total points squandered to date: (3) - Yes I understand every team will lose, but in this case the Knights were expected to win, had more talent, obviously came out flat, or ended up not "wanting it" as badly as the other team. Expectations are what they are, but this team has the capability to do something special in the ECAC's and NCAA's.

Any word on Grenzy's shoulder? He should get another week-end off (vs. U-18).

Edit: I generally don't read much of INCH, but after watching Stephen Hawking last night on the Discovery Science channel, and my wife continuing to ask....WHY????, I thought this was funny:

While You’re There: Clarkson's Department of Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering will present a seminar titled, "Thermal Spraying for Coating or Diffusion Bonding of Ti Alloys," which might be useful to golfers looking to refresh the titanium faces on their drivers. It's Friday afternoon on campus, and we can't think of a more exciting way to get ready for a hockey weekend.

Not only is that a fantastic quote, but sadly (or happily, I'm not sure which)for me, I have to know a little about thermal sprays on Ti for aircraft engine design. Sad that us engineers can turn any joke serious, isn't it....... Maybe I could write off a hockey weekend as a business expense...:D
