View Full Version : Week 2: At Providence and UMass
Well the competition becomes a bit tougher this weekend. Time to put the rest the awful showing on the road last year and win both of these games. We should have beaten UMass last year and were badly outshot by Providence but won last year. This is the opening weekend for both opponents so we should have some advantage with the 2 games under our belts. Time to make a statment to Hockey Least. Tech is back. LGT

Figure a split, especially after a long bus ride to RI. However, if the Kinghts sweep, Mo moves to Potsdam and stays for a loong time.
I think we can score, but can our D deal with the quick PVD forwards and the big ice @ UMass? I think the goalie, whomever his is, will be busy both nights.

Do we see Smith and/or McNulty this weekend?

My vote is no. I think Roll understands that this team is good enough to contend for an at-large bid for the NCAA tournament, and I doubt he wants to sacrifice OOC games just to get backup goalies ice time. The first time I'd expect to see either one would be if we have a huge lead this weekend, or in the exhibition vs. the USA under 18 team in a few weeks.

"If we're gonna have succuss, a lot of it's gonna hinge on David" -Coach Roll
I can't find it, but I thought I heard or read where Coach said that "{paraphrase} every games important and we're not going to experiment... There's compition for goaltender but right now Leggio is the man."

DaredevilCU,
Thanks for your information about videostreaming, and I agree that David Leggio will be in goal this weekend. After all, he was selected to the ECAC Honor Roll for his prowess in the Clarkson net last weekend.
Best of luck, CLARKSON GOLDEN KNIGHTS.....FRY THE FRIARS TOKNIGHT.

Congratulations to our Golden Knights on their 6 ~ 1 victory over Providence College. Regardless of what PC fans say about their team not really being ready for this game, there is no question about CU's state of readiness.
Unselfishly, David Cayer passed the puck to defenseman Matt Curley to set up Clarkson's first goal in the eleventh minute of Period 1. This was Matt's first goal since his freshman year. Coach Roll complimented Matt after the game by saying he thought this was Matt's best game as a Golden Knight. Matt was chosen as the second star of the game for his industrious hard work, and Michael Grenzy was selected as the first star with his three assists and fine defensive plays.
Here they are, folks, all of our goal scorers and their helpers:
1. Matt Curley with the assist being given to David Cayer
2. Chris D'Alvise with assists from Michael Grenzy and Nick Dodge
3. Steve Zalewski with assists from Shawn Weller and Michael Grenzy
4. David Cayer with assists from Michael Grenzy and Matt Beca
5. Chris D'Alvise with help from no one except the big empty net
6. Steve Zalewski from Matt Beca and the empty net
And not to be overlooked is David Leggio's brilliance in stopping 34 out of 35 Providence College shots on goal. I think David stopped a two on one PC breakaway in the first period to set the tone of the game from then on.
As of this morning, Steve Zalewski and Matt Beca hold the joint honor of leading the Golden Knights in scoring with five points apiece. They are closely followed by David Cayer, Shawn Weller, and Michael Grenzy each with four points.
You know what? This group of guys is utilizing a total team effort in order to be successful. They are all good friends, and they play well together.
ON TO VICTORY AGAINST THE U-MASS MINUTEMEN TOKNIGHT.

Thank you, Mike, it is always fabulous to read of our victory from another perspective. Clarkson is making a name for itself in New England, and we hope that good name will be re-enhanced again toknight in Amherst, MA.
After losing soooo many games on the road last season, we have a lot to be proud of already in this young season.
LET'S GO TECHERS, ON TO VICTORY TOKNIGHT.

I believe that tonight will be the Knights stiffest test yet. PC is good, but conceding a bit to the excuse makers, it was there first game, and Clarkson already had a couple under their belts. Umass has played a game and played solidly, even without some of their regular players
Meanwhile, Cahoon had snapped his fingers to stop any team violations (some he said had carried over from last year) so the Minutemen had some players who sat out the opener on suspensions."
"You can't have the inmates running the asylum," Cahoon said.
Alex Berry (6 games), Chris Capraro (3), Topher Bevis (1), and Jon Quick (1) were among those not in the lineup last night. Quick, the No. 1 goaltender, is expected to start tonight against Clarkson. Cahoon stressed though that Meyers had also earned last night's start by his work in camp, and the exhibition game.

Well, it wasn't a win but a tie on the road is not bad.
The good:
A 3 point weekend on the road.
Goals by Cayer, Dodge and Tim Marks (His first as a Golden Knight).
Solid play by Leggio again.
Coming back to tie (something we did not do last year).
The not so good:
Two God Awful turnovers by Curley and Bellows gave UMass 2 goals. Otherwise this one could have been a 3-1 win.
Grenzy suffers a shoulder injury and does not play most of the game.

Just got home from the game...
It was a fun time, but frustrating because we should''ve won. UmASS had a strong forecheck and the 2 turnovers that led to scores were not the only times that they gave the Knights fits in there own end. Otherwise... I like Clarksons PP. Very patient. Umass caught on and made some adjustments toward the end of the game, but that's gonna be a strong unit this year. On PK it looked to me like Dodge was itching for one of his SHG's. I was itching too. Dodge's PP goal was absolutely sweet. His feet were behind the goal line and the puck was just over it away from the goal (about 1/2 way to the side boards) and he wristed the bad angle shot over Quick's shoulder (and hit the water bottle:) ). I've never seen a shot like it. Umass has a new "Jumbotron" it's very nice so I got to see the replay and loved watching it again.
My kids and I got to shake hands with none other than Dave Taylor:D .
Oh one more quick note: My kids got $5 off their ticket for wearing their jersies. Umass does this even for visiting jerseys which I thought is quite gracious and classy.
In the post game interview Coach Dreschel was not pleased about the game or the outcome. The only guy he praised was Leggio.

Thanks to our diligent researcher, Mike, there is another perspective on last knight's game. I realized that Greg Drechsel was very disappointed with the play of the Golden Knights last knight as he spoke briefly with Gary Mikel during the post-game show. The U-Mass Minutemen were projected to finish about in 7th place by some pollsters, and Providence was supposed to be in 6th place.
On the other hand, I can accept the tie with the realization that we still have not lost a game this season. Mike, that newspaper article gave a lot of credit to Captain Nick Dodge, who never stops using his innate ability and talent to be the best player he can be. Nick is always moving when he is on the ice. It also referenced just how close Steve Zalewski came in scoring in the final few seconds of the overtime period.
We do have a new scoring leader this morning....it is David Cayer, who leads the team with six points, earned from having four goals and two assists in the four games he has played. Following closely behind and tied with five points are Steve Zalewski, Nick Dodge, and Matt Beca, who is an excellent freshman hockey player.
I am thrilled that Tim Marks got his first goal last knight to tie the game for Clarkson. Otherwise, we may have come home with our first loss. That would have made the long trip back to Potsdam even longer.
Chuck, it was great to read your description of the game. What a thrill that must have been for your family to attend that game. Good parents do good things for their children.

It might be ok for fans to accept a tie in a game like last night's but there's no way coaches will.
A coach who accepts a tie in a game against a weaker team, especially this early in the season is sending a dangerous message. It often leads to a lost season.
The coaches know what the team is capable of and after opening with three wins, it's not the time to accept a performance far below capabilities. Praising only the goalie says it all.

Well, no POTW this week, but Cayer did make the honor role. :)

helped to lead the Golden Knights to their best weekend on the
road in several years with four points over the weekend with a

from the INCH blog (http://slog.cstv.com/rinkrat/2006/10/picking_up_the_gauntlet.html)...
15) Clarkson - George Roll didn't talk to the media after Saturday night's tie with UMass, which suggests that the team's effort wasn't indicative of what's expected. I still saw some very nice things from the Golden Knights in Amherst on Saturday, especially when it comes to Nick Dodge, and judging by the 6-1 beating Clarkson pinned on a very promising Providence team on Friday, I've got to think that the Kinghts are worthy of this ranking.
Going with Bill and Rich's assessment
more from the INCH blog (http://slog.cstv.com/rinkrat/2006/10/game_5_final_thunderkiss_65.html#more)
The Minutemen generally outworked their foes tonight, but Nick Dodge was the best player on the ice tonight. It wasn't just the scoring, but he did some nice work on the penalty kill as well. He's the real thing, and Carolina is going to be very happy in a year or two.
Fun bus trip home. LGT..."A Workman That Needeth Not to be Ashamed,"
