It looks like we started getting recruits for the 2008 season.
According to Heisenberg's site we have commitments from:

Corey Tamblyn-RC Markham (OPJHL) 5'11 174 1-24-89 CLARKSON ( 2008)

Louke Oakley-RW Bowmanville (OPJHL) 5'11 174 3-7-89 CLARKSON (2008)

MikeR, is there anything you can dig up on the newbies.:)

Quick search finds.....Both are OHL draft picks (Tamblyn - Sudbury; Oakley- Sarnia). Tamblyn played for Port Hope last year, broke his leg the year before. Both played on the same Toronto Red Wings team (bantam hockey)
Oakley 18-22-40 in 52 games.

Cory Tamblyn/RC - Toronto Red Wings. Back after missing much of the season with broken leg; edges well; excellent passes; quick feet; a lot of energy; loves to draw the defence to him then dish; very good player.

other...school award nomination
Oakley - Nominator's comments: "Louke is a dedicated, hard-working student who always tries his best, his leadership in physical education is admired by his peers and staff."

Notable achievements: Member of team that won two consecutive OMHA championships, consistent high rankings at various tournaments and is a two-time winner for the most dedicated player.

Future plans: To obtain a scholarship to an elite school to study automotive design and to be playing in the NHL in four years.

Don't know much about it, but many of the recruits that Clarkson has been rumored to be after, competed in the "Big Nickel Tournament".

An excerpt from the USHR report, don't know if this would be '07 or '08 but:

"Salisbury senior defenseman Kevin Quick, a Tampa Bay third-round draft pick, who, by the way, played very well at the Lightning’s rookie camp, has narrowed his college choices to Clarkson, Michigan, Ohio State, and Providence. He is currently taking his official visits and will make a decision in November."

Sounds like he would be a great pick up for us....and better yet, nice to see him consider a small school among the behemoths.

Saw that over on the UNH thread as well...Would be a nice recruit for '08. Hopefully Phil Paquet is letting Kevin know the great team Coach Roll & staff are building here.

Edit: Assuming he makes his official visit by Thanksgiving...that would either be the Q or Princeton game @ Cheel. I'd assume he was an '07 if he went to Clarkson, and based on his performance @ the Lightning prospect camp.

Louke Oakley injured during Sunday's game, did not return (http://www.durhamregion.com/dr/sports/story/3743876p-4328274c.html)

Oakley missed out on a chance to add to his point totals Sunday, the recipient of a knee from Cobourg's Mat McKinlay, who was ejected from the game with a major penalty midway through the first period. Oakley did not return after the hit.

Breakaway Relay = Team West won this event.

Fastest Skater = Louke Oakley, Bowmanville Eagles (OPJHL) 15.54 seconds/lap

I think Riley Nash is the younfer brother of Cornell freshman Brandon Nash. I'm pretty sure that Riley is a prime target for the Big Red.

He is and is (http://bigredpuckhead.blogspot.com/2006/11/prospects-2007-2008.html#links).

Riley Nash, a 6'1", 175 lb. rookie for the Salmon Arm Silverbacks of the BCHL, has narrowed his college choices. Nash is considered to be the top recruit left in North America that has yet to committ to an NCAA school.

Nash's older brother, Brendon Nash, currently plays center for Cornell. Cornell also happens to be one of Nash's schools that he has chosen to visit.

The Univeristy of New Hampshire is also one of the five schools, including Michigan, Denver, North Dakota and the aforementioned Cornell. It's good to see that teams other than BC and BU are garnering attention from top level recruits. Hockey East needs a lot more commitments from that upper echelon to compete with the CCHA and WCHA in particular.

Nash is currently third on his team in scoring with a 6-6-12 line. He will either arrive next fall or in '08 to one of those schools.

Anyone have any info on where he's leaning?

It is obvious to most here, but the location of Clarkson is perfect for many to see their first college game at Cheel.

Mike,

Many thanks for providing us with the information on recruiting. Another plus for some Clarkson recruits is the University's proximity to some Canandian provinces. This gives the families of the players an opportunity to attend the home games at Cheel, as well as a choice of traveling to some of the away games. Some families are here at Cheel every single weekend; others make the trip as often as possible.

Clarkson's recruiting must be a bit easier now as the team is gaining national recognition for its hockey achievements. It goes without saying that Cheel Arena is a facility which sells itself....as does the Clarkson campus.

Slowly, ever so slowly, after the firing of Coach Mark Morris, people are returning to support the Golden Knights. What could be better than a winter weekend of Clarkson hockey at Cheel Arena?

KNOW NO LIMITS, CLARKSON GOLDEN KNIGHTS!

Although we are still vacationing here in Florida, I did read an online article from Northern New York yesterday. The article began by stating two of the best players in the OPJHL are at the top of Clarkson's incoming freshmen class.

1. Soctt Freemen, a forward, was the leading scorer and MVP of the Ontario Provincial Junior Hockey League.

2. Brian Rufenach, a defenseman, was the Ontario Provincial Junior Hockey League Rookie of the Year.

3. Brandon DeFazio is also from the Ontario Provincial Junior Hockey League and played for the Oakville Blades. Brandon scored 12 goals and earned 33 assists playing in 45 games this past season.

4. Tom Pizzo, a defenseman from the NH Junior Monarchs.

5. Dan Reed, a defenseman, from a prep school in Salisbury, CT. Other schools interested in Dan were SLU,:) Vermont, Brown, Dartmouth, and Yale.

6. Alex Wyse, a goalie playing for the Richmond Hills Rams. Alex is from Amherst, NY, and he was accepted at Clarkson two years ago when he graduated from high school. He is interested in studying engineering. He just recently received notification that he was invited to be a Golden Knight.

In addition, there are two European players who may also become Golden Knights. However, that decision will not be made until this summer.

It was also noted that recruits who had not yet signed letters of intent could begin doing that as of April 12.

Many thanks to our coaches, George, Greg, and JF, who continue to do an extraordinary job in recruiting the best talent they can find.

It appears that Julian Cayer, David's younger brother, will not join the Golden Knights until the 2008 fall semester. I think I read somewhere that Julian may attend Northwood Prep in Lake Placid this coming year.

OUR KNIGHTS ARE AWESOME...AND THEN SOME.

Vic, I did a little looking around about him. Here's his stat line:

30 Alex Wyse GP:17.7 MIN:1064 SHOTS: 738 GA: 68 GAA:3.84 SPCT: 0.908

It looks like he was pretty much in a platoon on his team, which finished in third place in the not too great GMHL. I did notice on their site that he won the team "Heart Award" which is the type of player we look for at Clarkson, but I'm not sure he's the goalie of the future we're looking for.

This graph caught my attention:

"Millar also talked to Sullivan's agent and then received the phone call he was seeking last week. "

If the guy had an agent 'before' he signed with this team, wouldn't he technically be ineligble for the NCAA anyway?
I mean isn't that one of the big key facts for these NBA draft underclassmen who may want to come back to college, that they can't hire an agent?

Well you know how that goes, the agent is a "family advisor" when the player is with an NCAA team, then when he signs, he becomes the agent.

That's pretty much what I was thinking about the advisor/agent thing. What struck me was how much contact the Sarnia coach was able to have with Sullivan. An NCAA coach isn't allowed nearly that much, and it seemed like this coach did a pretty hard sell to get him to change his mind.

According to USCHO via USHR it appears we lost out on a very good goalie. Hoyle, being a Oakville Blade (home of Dodge, Beca, and new recruit DeFazio) I thought we may have an inside track on him.
Win some, lose some.

Not I, Mike. Brent Sullivan was a tough break, the O and the Q leverage the heck out of the NCAA, win some and you lose some. We are getting recruits from the OPJHL, the Preps, and Overseas. If anything, I would like to see us to get more midwestern and western recruits. With a tougher schedule (and winning out there:) ) will get the Clarkson name out even further, we need to remember where we were a short while ago and where we are now.

The former is for either 2008 or 2009, the latter for 2009 or 2010. They both will play for the Jr. Bruins (EJHL) in the upcoming season.

The reason that I didn't want to post it is because I had hoped they would go to RPI. It should soon become apparent why I hoped that, but as of now a certain fact has not yet come out in the open.

Looks like we lost out on a potential goalie....I hear USHR is reporting Boston Junior Bruins/(EJHL) 6’5”, 230 lb. goaltender Connor Knapp has committed to Miami University for either ’08 or ’09.

Knapp, a 5/1/90 birthdate, is from York, NY, which is about an hour east of Buffalo. This summer, he had a strong Select 17 Festival. His play there convinced the Miami staff to have him in for a visit afterward.

In addtion to Miami, Knapp took visits to Clarkson and RPI.

I can finally post what I was alluding to earlier. I had hoped that RPI would get Matt and Joe Zarbo because their older brother, Mark, has transferred from Bentley to RPI. Surprisingly, since he is not eligible until next year, he is now on RPI's roster http://www.rpiathletics.com/roster.asp?playerid=1357&sport=6. The fact that Mark had transferred was known to me for a couple of months. The rumor is that Mark is a walkon.

I have no knowledge that RPI was actually interested in the two younger Zarbos.

This may be good news, depending on the "agent/family advisor". Brent Sullivan is back with the Brockville Braves after playing 3 games in the OHL. Since he is still in HS, I believe NCAA rules stipulate he must sit out a year in residence and 3 games to regain his NCAA eligibility.

So, 2009 may be an option, depending on that pesky "agent" thingy.

placid

Don't see any reason why Potter couldn't be a starter next year.

Remember, Leggio wasn't a big recruit. He was a walk on. No reason another walk on can't excel as well. In fact, come to think of it, Walsh and Shawn Grant were like that too. Traylen is last 'recruited' starting goalie since Dan Murphy and he didn't pan out, so maybe there's something to the walk-on thing.

Question 1. Clarkson will not officially announce the Class 2011 until April or May of 2008. However, info does leak somehow and we do find out after a LOI has been signed.

Question 2. If we don't get a recruit for 2008, Potter and Wyse will most likely compete for the starting job.

Of course, it is only my opinion.

The junior leagues usually like to brag about who signs with what college. Most likely we will find out from one of them before the official announcement.

I agree with you about Potter, he could be a starting goaltender. Because there are only 57 starting positions in D-1 hockey, a lot of "better than average" goaltenders have to come to college as walk ons and earn their scholarship. The NHL draft has a similar history, although it seems there have been more drafted goaltenders in the last 5 years.

It would be nice to see some more of Potter but with every game being a "must win", I can definitely understand the desire to keep Leggio between the pipes. If we lose on Friday in Florida (hopefully not), Potter should get the nod on Saturday. I'd also like to see him in a few games against the lower third of the ECAC, especially if we get a lead. Of course the staff sees him in practice; they know what they have.

Speaking of Wyse though, is he actually practicing with the team. If he is, why don't they dress him for home games? He's a 20 year old freshman, I doubt he'd be red-shirted. However, as an engineering major, maybe? they want him to focus on the classroom.

I don't believe Clarkson or SLU can redshirt anyone, unless its a medical redshirt. Remember, they are D3 schools. D3 schools can't redshirt, even in their D1 sports. There are other things D1 schools can do, Clarkson/SLU/RPI/CC et all can't. I believe they don't get the same payday for making big events that a school like Michigan gets, because of the D3 thing.

I knew they didn't get the money, but I didn't know they couldn't redshirt. The medical blueshirt is allowed at all divisions, you don't even lose eligibility at D3 if you are granted it.

The Knights now have at least five recruits committed for next year, maybe Matt Zarbo as well. They are graduating six seniors. Will they recruit any more players for '08 ?

Maybe they will fill the third goalie spot with a walk-on and let Potter and Wyse battle for # 1 ?

Ecacwatcher, who do you think are the three best available goalies in New England or the OPJHL?

ecacwatcher
12-09-2007, 08:43 PM
Hard to say in OPJHL as I have only seen a few play...some very good goalies with mediocre (or worse) stats playing for poor teams, some goalies that are perhaps overrated that have great stats playing for strong teams...

Not sure about New England...perhaps a goalie recruit will come from the USHL?

Goaltenders are so hard to read in their younger days. It seems that you have to recruit them based on their skill sets, rather than their statistics or even their current ability. If someone would have told me that David Leggio was going to lead us to an ECACHL championship when he was a freshman, I'd have laughed in their face. This year, he (and good team defense) has secured wins for us when the offense has been less than productive on the scoresheet.

So much seems to hinge on the effort goaltenders put in and their coaching. Look at the improvement in Billy Blase this year now that he has a volunteer coach and Yale student who's number hangs in the rafters at MSG. Does anyone know who works with the goaltenders at Clarkson?

ecacwatcher
12-10-2007, 09:44 AM
Good point about the goalies. If you can find a young one that is technically sound, works hard with their own goalie coach, the stats don't need to be the determining factor. Of course, size and speed help too !

I don't think Clarkson has a goalie coach, but I assume that all three goalies work with their own coaches at different times during the hockey season and the off-season.

There have been very few NCAA goalie signings lately, and most of those are for 2009. There are four or five ECAC teams probably looking to bring in a goalie for next year. Quinnipiac, Clarkson, Colgate, Union, SLU all graduating seniors, most of them play a lot of minutes. May be some competitive recruiting going on, and once one goalie is signed, more will follow.

Somewhat familiar with the Selects and especially with their founder and of the whole CD program and the Selects coach, Jim Salfi who over 30 years ago coached RPI. Program also produced Shawn Weller and some other recent Knights.

Let me put 2 cents (US) for a goaltender who is probably off the radar screen..

Matt Brooker, Marquette (NAHL) 1989 6'2" 175. Have watched him since he was a Bantam. Good fundamentals. More importantly, Redlight thinks he has more of an upside than the other local kid who is on the NTDP 18U team.

USHR ran a great article on Northwood Prep and its rise from the ashes

"It’s way too early to say the Lake Placid boarding school is back to those glory days, but under second -year head coach Jeff Matthews, they are having their best season in a long time, with a 27-5-2 record with eight games to play. Since they are a prep school, yet fall a little outside the purview of USHR’s prep coverage, we’ll try to fill you in on a handful of the players.

First off, senior forward Julien Cayer (Clarkson), junior defenseman Nik Pokulok (Clarkson) and PG goaltender Richie LaVeau were all ranked on NHL Central scouting’s mid-season rankings, so NHL scouts have been showing up in large numbers this season.

Cayer is the real deal, a 6’4”, 190 lb. smooth-skating left shot center with excellent hands, reach, and shot. Against Wyoming Seminary last weekend, he scored a top shelf goal from the right face off circle. “It was an NHL shot,” said Matthews. “The goalie reacted two seconds after it went in.”

At Clarkson, Cayer, who was ranked #77 on Central’s list, will be following in the footsteps of older brother David.
Pokulok, will be following his brother, Sasha, a first round draft choice of the Washington Caps playing at Hershey, to the ECAC. Pokulok, #96 on Central’s list, will be following Cayer, as well, for the two will also be teammates at Clarkson."

I actually beat MikeR to this one:

From the CJHL web page

Nick Tremblay capped off a memorable season in the CJHL as the 19 year old native of Candiac, PQ soared to the top of all scorers with 110 points, including a league leading 51 goals and was named the league's Most Valuable Player in the process. Along with these awards, Tremblay was also selected the First All Star Centre, joining Smiths Falls teammate Mark Borowiecki and Manager Bill Bowker on the first team.

Tremblay will accompany Borowieck again next fall as he accepted a full hockey scholarship from Clarkson University beginning September of 2008. The Bears have sent no less than seven players off to the NCAA Division I ranks on scholarships this season.

As the CJHL MVP, Tremblay will also be the nominee for the Canadian Junior A Hockey Leagues' RBC Player of the Year, which will be announced during the Royal Bank Cup in Cornwall from May 3-11.

Clarkson isn't built to take in the junior '1 and done' type player. We seem to find diamonds in the rough who enjoy a smaller atmosphere, and right now it's working.

That said, if he wants to come to Clarkson, then welcome aboard, just don't expect blue chips to fall in Potsdam, and if they do, don't expect them to stay all four years.

When I hear Golden Knights seniors publicly say the best four years of their lives were spent at Clarkson, those words speak volumes about Clarkson University.

The Golden Knights, as a whole, are very happy to be at Clarkson. Another factor that influences a prospect's decision (if they are Canadian) is the proximity of Potsdam to Canada. So many parents are able to attend all home games and not have to drive an unreasonable distance to watch their sons play hockey. An example of this is David Cayer and his younger brother Julien, who will be a Golden Knight in the fall of 2008. Mr. and Mrs. Cayer have the privilege of being parents of Golden Knights for eight consecutive years.....how lucky they are that their sons have so much talent!

Another positive factor is the relationship the coaches have with the players....it is excellent and respectful. At a post-game gathering in the Barben Rooms, one of our freshmen made the comment how much the team appreciates what the Booster Club does for the Golden Knights. The Booster Club organizes a fall barbecue and takes the team out for dinner at least several times a year, plus the team are the guests of honor at the annual banquet. We do our best to make the Golden Knights feel at home throughout the hockey season. It also is important to mention that President and Karen Collins are so supportive of the Clarkson hockey program. Tony is always willing to offer encouraging words to the individual players, whom he knows personally.

We are not the number one Division I hockey team, but we are proud of the Clarkson hockey program and what it does to help the Golden Knights. And it goes without saying that their Clarkson education will always be an important part of their lives.

I think it is my lifes calling to one day join the booster club ! The best thing about the Clarkson hockey program is the genuine love the the town has for this team. We are a small town team who can play with the big boys on the national scale. Its really great to see the players have such respect for booster club members.

Is there a way to join even if you dont have money to give? I would love to be doing anything to help the team out... maybe giving tours of potsdam or something.

I will be writing up a column of an interview i did with Leggio , Dodge , and Becca. Would anyone like a copy ?

I'm not sure anyone will ever be better at getting more money from CUSA than Mike Powers. When I got here, the frisbee team was just getting started, was all about fun, and we weren't that competitive most of the time. Well, against the really good teams.

Now they're on-par with several excellent teams, Mike (and the rest of the eBoard) is working on getting the club UPA sanctioned and taking them to sectionals this year. Heck of an improvement over 5 years.

Yep - this old Bill is '63 after 5 years - shoulda been '62, but was having too good a time. Finishing up 50 years of supporting Clarkson Hockey - 2 FF's ('62 & '91 - was in Louisiana for the great Cornell/Clarkson shootouts - too far to make it). High point was a long time ago - Clarkson beat Michigan (centered and captained by Mr. Berensen) 5-4 in game 1 of the '62 FF. He never forgot and even badmouthed us at the FF in the '96 press conference after they won in Cinncy. Far as I know, we are 1-0 vs Michigan in the NCAA's. :D

Wow, if I recall the 1974 playoff season correctly, I was busy causing my mother morning sickness and unusual cravings. It is really great how our sport brings fans of all ages together... Dean Newkofsky commented about that when Rich and I went up to the BC game in January, something like "How did a '77 from NJ and a '96 from the Hudson Valley end up associated with each other?" It even brings us together with fans of other schools (or institutes in some cases). I've really never seen anything like it in any sport.

Dan,

I'm actually '74 so like Vic, I lived through the horror that the '74 season was, even more so because I was a student mgr. and statistician that season. If y'all are nice to me at the Regionals I'll share some Yorkie stories with you. What a season.

All these years later, many of my '74 classmates insist at reunions, that we didn't make the ECACs, when only the top 8 in a 16 or 17 team league did, only because I had the stats screwed up. :D

Wish that had been the case.

The clear highlight of that season was watching a very quiet, shy, skinny freshman by the name of "Taylor" play. It clearly became obvious that this kid had a future in hockey.

Congrats to the Knights on adding Jake Morley to their team. It's always exciting to have some local kids on the team. SLU has several as well. I'm sure it must make the young players in the area more confident that they too might have a chance to play college hockey.
I know this is the wrong thread for the following but I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the Clarkson team and staff for representing our league as well as they did in the NCAA tournament. I think we in the Great Frozen North are fortunate to have two Div. I teams of the caliber of Clarkson and SLU to represent us. Pierre-Alexandre Marion, Truro (MJAHL)
Stephan Vigier, Swan Valley (MJHL)

Drew,

We are in Florida now too....near Tampa....and the rain has passed through our area. We are enjoying comfortable weather with bright sunny skies. I think the coaches were meeting in Florida sometime this past week.

And, that cute little Kyle looks to be as handsome as his Dad!

It sounds as if the incoming freshmen class should make an impact right away.....if things go the way we hope they will. For some reason, even the very bests recruits take a while to accustom themselves to the collegiate style of hockey.

I am still very impressed watching Tim Potter play the few times we saw him this season. He is quick, agile, and active in the net. We hope he continues to play well this coming season, which will begin sometime in the far, far distant October.

There is currently a poll on the Clarkson hockey website.....so far the results for the most important victory the Golden Knights earned this season was defeating St. Cloud State University in the first round of the NCAA's. From my perspective, Clarkson's most memorable victory was defeating Princeton in order to earn first place in the ECAC this season and be the regular season champions! The banner hanging at Cheel Arena will be a true testament to Clarkson's outstanding accomplishments throughout the entire 2007 ~ 2008 season. Comments anyone?

A brief write-up (5/21) in HF/ISS top 30 prospects...Tremblay and Borowiecki listed as "stock rising"

Mark Borowiecki, D
Smiths Falls Bears
Height: 6.00.7 Weight: 185
Draft sleeper! Selected as Top Defenseman in the CJHL during 2007-08, this left-handed defenseman is a physical force on the ice each shift. With exceptional upper body strength, he plays tough in all areas of the ice - very physical along the boards. With good speed and agility has the ability to rush the puck and beat defenders. Can pivot both ways very well and
closes on speedy forwards. Signed to a scholarship at Clarkson beginning in September 2008.

Nick Tremblay, LW
Smiths Falls Bears
Height: 5.10.5 Weight: 190
This good skating winger was Bears' go-to guy in the offensive zone and selected as CJHL MVP, league scoring champion, and nominated for Canadian Junior A Player of the year. Will attend Clarkson in September 2008 on a full scholarship. His good speed and great acceleration make it difficult for defenders to contain him.

Hockey's Future http://www.hockeysfuture.com/articles/10460/ncaa2008_draft_review/

Two surprising program stories coming out of the draft have to do with Clarkson’s four selections and Minnesota’s two.

The Golden Knights haven’t had four recruits selected since 1991, when they had five. One of them is incoming defenseman Mark Borowiecki. He was taken by host Ottawa in the fifth round (139th overall) and was especially thrilled at having been selected.

“I was little surprised. I was talking to a few teams but Ottawa wasn't one of them,” Borowiecki said. “I was thrilled when they took me being a kind of Kanata boy. My old personal trainer from the gym phoned me. He was listening to it on the radio, decided to phone me. My parents were crying when they heard about it. They were all thrilled for me down there (at Clarkson) too, and they're kind of like a family being a small school. I’m going to Clarkson next year and I'm really looking forward to that because they have a great hockey program. I can't wait to get that started.”

Quote from Boston Bruin's Web on NHL Draft: " No. 173 Nicholas Tremblay, C, Smiths Falls (CJHL) -- Tremblay is an impressive young man in determination, hockey ability and intelligence. A Quebec native, he dedicated this season to perfecting his English while leading his league in scoring. Tremblay is a clutch performer as evidenced by his 12 power-play goals, 19 power-play assists and six game-winning goals. He will attend Clarkson University this fall."

I believe it's great for Clarkson's program that 4 incoming freshmen have been drafted. This certainly addresses the potential they have in the eyes of NHL scouts.
The worst part of this is how the program may have to fight to keep these kids with the NHL scouts knocking on the door after every season. As a result it would make it tough for the coaching staff to build a team. Just food for thought.....

I don't think leaving early will come up. Earliest pick was a fifth-rounder I believe. If you look back most of the early departures are from rounds 1-3.
I'm not saying these guys won't play in the NHL and do well. I just mean that, historically, you don't often see guys picked in the latter half leaving school early.

I think that really depends on the team. Some GM's like having their prospects developed at the college level, some would rather them play in the AHL.

I guess the point I was making was guys picked in the last 3 rounds are usually not big prospects for an organization and players they dont mind waiting to get.
Most of the Clarkson guys who have left early (Mitchell, Cole, etc) were picked in the first 3 or 4 rounds I believe, I think Weller was also but I don't remember his round.
I don't remember ANY 5-7 round guy in recent memory who left early (unless he left early for 'other' reasons like Ruutu, who just didn't like american college hockey)

Weller was drafted in the 3rd round 77th overall. I look at it this way, if these 4 kids have success in their first few seasons I am willing to bet those NHL teams will come calling with money. It's a "catch-22" for Clarkson.

Cole was a 3rd rounder, Mitchell was an 8th and Marchant was a 7th rounder. NHL teams watch very closely and if they think you have plateaued vs. college competition they will pull you....no matter what round. Columbus was pulling hard on 5th rounder Clitsome before his senior year.

Is it it a catch 22? Maybe... You recruit the best talent available, period. Having too many NHL draft picks is like saying "I have too many Fifties for my wallet".
