Drew-
I couldn't agree with you more about not having enough draft picks. The question is this, does Clarkson University promote itself as one of academics or hockey factory? Once again, I believe it to be a "catch-22".
I am only viewing the past players at Clarkson who decided to leave early, Weller and Nickerson. Each left the program a bit short and early.
Mitchell and Cole have proven their value in the NHL. The latter, not so much. Year in and year out I honestly believe Clarkson has the talent to be one of the best in the Nation, only to lose talent to the NHL. While this says much about the program it lends one to believe that Clarkson is becoming a program who values talent above actual academics. Just food for thought.

I don't think that's entirely fair, Brian. Sure, Nickerson's professional career has been disappointing to say the least (although I will always relish the memory of the 'non-fight' at cornell), it is still very early to pass judgement on Weller's decision to leave early. His club felt that he was better off developing in the AHL and signed him to do so. That's a whole other level than college hockey (despite what WCHA folks may say). Not everyone gets to the show the first year out of college.
Four recruits as draft picks only speaks to their potential athletically. It seems to me this coaching staff knows Clarkson well enough not to sell it short on the academic side. Let's get the new guys to Potsdam at least, then see how they do in the classroom.

Todd-
I wasn't saying these kids don't have the academic abilities. Rather they must have something upstairs to even gain admission to Clarkson.
My point is simple, it is bad for any program to have talent and only lose to the NHL so quickly. That's all........I do appreciate the "too many $50's in the wallet" analogy.

FWIW,
A quick glance at my 2007-08 U Mich Media guide showed 11 or 12 NHL draft choices.
Count me among those that having a large number of draftees on your team is not necessarily a guarantee of success at the college level.
Similar to SAT scores being an accurate predictor of college academic performance.
:)
I do like our incoming goalie though. Good size and good background. Might he follow the "# ofgames played" pattern of Dan-O?

Clarkson recruit Nick Tremblay is playing for the Champlain Valley Elite this month http://www.cvelite.com/page1.html. Also on the team are RPI recruits Mike Bergin ('08) and Jacob Laliberte ('09) among others.

Joe,
Is that anyway to talk to a former goalie?:D You should know better! :)
Granted UM was there and we weren't but my point is that having a large number of draftees doesn't guarantee success at the NCAA level.
Coaches will always stress that attitude, team play, and work ethic are just as important as talent. Often times more so.
Remember that Lou Holtz quote about "Hard work beating talent?" That sums it up nicely and I agree 1000%.

Julien Cayer absent from Redwings Camp (http://www.freep.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080708/SPORTS05/807080371/1053/SPORTS)
NOTEBOOK: Julien Cayer, a fifth-round pick, was the only player from the 2008 draft class unable to attend the development camp. He's recovering from a hamstring injury and wouldn't have been able to take the ice.

Karpowich impressive in Blues camp (http://www.stlouisgametime.com/3/?p=760)...
Karpowich — Honestly, very impressive. I think he was the best goalie of the four in camp this year, taking that honor away from Reto Berra. His mechanics look very good, he’s pretty quick into and out of the butterfly, and he keeps it simple and lets the puck hit him, for the most part. He didn’t get many opportunities to display his puck-moving abilities, but the few times he did, he seemed comfortable with it and confident about it. Karpowich has the potential to be a real late-round steal for the Blues, and style-wise, I’d compare him to a guy like Miika Kiprusoff. Not saying he’ll definitely be as good as Kirpusoff, but the potential is there.
The Blues can stash him away at Clarkson for as long as four years, or until the goalie logjam in the organization straightens itself out, and let him develop at the same level, in the same league, that Ken Dryden (another big Ontario boy who went the Ivy League route) did almost forty years ago — has it really been that long?

Am I the only one who doesn't want to be associated with the Ivy League?

Don't worry, I got the joke.
But more and more often at school I hear people comparing clarkson to Ivy league schools, and frankly I think it is a terrible comparison.
the 8 ivies are very different than clarkson, and they shouldn't be mentioned in the same breath because of that.

agreed. Let the ivies keep their arrogance and sense of entitlement.

Northwood Goalie Richie LaVeau, who was headed to Norwich, apparently is now joining the Golden Knights.

Richie LaVeau...from USHR
LaVeau, a 6’2”, 190 lb. Illinois native who returned for a PG year, is still available to colleges. Plus, as a June ’89 birthdate, he has junior eligibility remaining. LaVeau, however, been set back by a sprained ankle suffered Feb. 2 and is still questionable for this weekend’s action. He’s athletic, moves well, and is strong through the lower body, which enables him to recover quickly. He already has some college offers, but the injury has set him back a bit. He’s just waiting to see how things shake out. LaVeau was ranked #36 among the goalies on Central’s (Scouting mid-term) list.

Well, at least RPI has the second highest rated ECAC incoming class (http://www.insidecollegehockey.com/7Archives/Features/0809/recruitsteam_0702.htm). For the second straight year, Clarkson was first and RPI second.

#12 overall recruiting class. Tops in the ECAC, only RPI (#14) also shows up in the top 15.
Edit: Looks like I was beaten by a minute. Apologies for the repeat.
