Another year in the books, and it's time to start looking forward to the next. Comparing the returnees from last year (http://goldenknightshockey.com/roundtable/showpost.php?p=12768&postcount=13) to this year indicates the fans should expect more improvement, but will it have the toughness, defense, resiliancy, and goaltending to achieve those goals. Interesting that a few years ago most here, including myself, was hoping for more goal scoring, and less grinders. Now that the point production has improved, some wish for more of the muckers on the Knight team. I don't know if I'd go that far, but Rich stated it best - "grinders with skills". I still agree with Coach Roll's philosophy -
"“(Coaches in the conference) have changed recruiting philosophies,” said Clarkson coach George Roll. “You have to have good team speed, players who can get up and down the ice.
“That's the kind of formula you need. Guys with some skill who can play an uptempo type of game. The chances generated have been up drastically since I took over here three years ago. Coaches have done a good job (getting players) with higher skill levels and skating ability.”

As far as OOC games are concerned I think the following is what we've heard so far:
- Bucky's Holiday Tournament
- A pair at SCSU, this is uncomfirmed but I remember reading this at the end of last yer.
- An assumed return visit from BGSU and Miami
- An assumed trip to RIT, at least 1 game.
If we take the RIT rematch as 1 game that leaves 4 games to fill the schedule.

Mike,
I have not seen Nathan Beausoleil at Cheel Arena for several months, so I am not certain if he is still really with the team or not.
Your post provided excellent reading....as well as providing an answer why Clarkson has recruited some smaller, speedier players. I think Max Kolu will be a major defensive force next season. He has been improving each month, and he is very tough. Not question though, about Chris Brekelmans being a great role model for the entire team. Chris really assumed his leadership role this season.
I just discovered that only Tyrell Mason and Nick Dodge were the two Golden Knights who played in every game this season....at least I think that's what I read.

I wasn't sure of his status either, as I read he had some early season off-ice problems, but he is still listed on the roster and as "DNP" on the game summaries, unlike Ryan Hodkinson. Guess either way we'll see plenty of '07 and '08 recruiting activity.

We went to UMass and Providence in '04-05. Back in 03-04 SLU played at UMass, I can't see that they ever went to Providence. I went to both UMass games. As Amherst is about 40 minutes from my house I'd like to see that become a regular on the circuit. With the history Tech has with Toot Cahoon from his princeton days I think that is possible. So if it is going to be a regular thing it would be Tech's turn to travel to New England. I hope so. We owe them a whooping in their barn!
Brett - tell me about Bucky's Holiday Tourney.

I'm pretty sure vicb mentioned it in another thread, but it's usaully over the New Year's holiday, and last time we were in it was 03-04 with Ferris, Yale and Sconny.
I think another trip to PU/Umass is possible but I think we might look to a different set of Hockey East travel pairs.

Yep, I did. I went to the tourney in 03-04. Played poorly against Ferris and lost and then walloped Yale 8-1 in the consolation game. I'm waiting to see the schedule for this year to decide whether to go back or go elsewhere. If we play St Cloud there I might consider taking that road trip instead.
As for the Bucky Tourney, it's Christmas just after. My guess is it will be Dec 29th and 30th. Held at the Kohl Center, the Wisconsin on campus rink. What a palace. No better college rink in the country and just as good as most NHL facilities. Someone in another thread mentioned the other teams. Don't remember who they were.

York and Roll do have ties together, I wouldn't put it out of the question.
Looking at the goaltending situation, one has to believe that Leggio is the #1 going into the fall. But I would still think Roll will have the competition be open to start the season.
Leggio finished up 11-9-3 with a .913 save percentage and a 2.57 GAA. Middle of the pack in all stats. I think his save % went up .002 points in the last weekend alone. In the games before he was the permanent starter Leggio went 6-5-2, after the desicion 5-4-1. It was 5-2-1 before last weekend.
Personally I though Roll made the right call at the right time. I had no problem rotating two goalies throughout the season and I think in college it's a smart stratagy. I feel leaving one guy out there as your workhorse leads to tired legs at the end of the season and I'll use Matias Lange at RPI as an example. Next year I'd like to see Leggio be our number one going into the season but still use McNulty every other weekend on Saturday's to keep him fresh and give Leggio a rest.

Don't forget they are bringing in Smith to goaltend. My guess is he will be given every chance to win the job. Competition is good.
York and Roll have ties, but BU travels with BC and Jack Parker refuses to make trips to the north country. That's why that series died.

The tie that kept this series going for several years was Billy O' and Yorkie for sure. When Billy left Tech to join the LA Kings, it ended. Had little or nothing to do with Parker. Besides Jerry has never beaten Tech since he has been at BC and has little or nothing good to say about Potsdam since he left in the 70s.
I don't think his tie with George, however strong it may be, will bring the series back. I'm not aware that Jackie Parker has any feelings one way or another towards Tech but he may just not want to make the NC roadtrip and it seems unlikely that BC would come here for two without a travel partner.

HEA teams play each other 3 times (x 9 teams) = 27
Beanpot = 2 (29)
Mid year tournament = 2 (31)
3 OOC games left
Harvard = 1 now only 2 left
Next year BC goes to Wisconsin for 2. With their HEA schedule, it is extremely doubtful that BC and BU will make a NC trip.
Now if SLU and us get to the NCAA tournament on a consistent basis, then we may be able to pick our OOC, rather than them picking us.

Joe,
To a great degree that was what I was getting at. However, even if BC had room in their schedule, I doubt they'd seriously consider coming to the NC. They don't want to do it for reasons stated earlier. Add to that the fact that playing the perceived "weak" ECACHL doesn't help their PWR, etc.

Hmmm...that got me to thinking. My nephew is in college not far from Wisconsin. I can kill two birds with one stone if I make that trip. Have never been out there but have wanted to go ever since Tech played a pair (lost both) at the then new Dane County Coliseum back in '72-'73, I think.
I had to pass on being a manager that year in order to concentrate on my studies...yeah, right. :rolleyes:

I have put in over the years and never got a sniff -- the problem is the NC$$ keeps your money forever and doesn't pay interest. I have been to 7 or 8 FF's (2 with the KNIGHTS playing) over the years, but never got tix in the draw.
Of course, now that I have connections back on the tournament committee, I can get'em any time I want - I passed this year - figured Wisconsin playing all the way in Wisconsin was not worth watching or the trip -- figured right, although you've got to give Yorkie (class act as usual) and the team a lot of credit for BC's showing this year - almost pulled it off, but Wisconsin too big and too fast - they deserved it. BC will be back in the next couple of years.
It really is a small world. Just got back from my vacation in Las Vegas, or as I like to call it Lost Wages. Happened to be wearing my Clarkson hat in the Venetian when who spots me but Kevin O'Flarherty parents, John and Sheila. Had a nice chat with them. Kevin got injured playing over in Germany (shoulder) and is recovering from that and is apparently looking for real work now ;) .

Well, mostly because its a pretty good mix of pretty good people from all over the place. There are fewer people (and therefore fewer "posts") than there used to be when I joined the list in the 90's. But they still have a get-together for the Frozen Four, and from what I understand it is reasonably well attended.
For one thing, I prefer it to having to sift through the flame wars and the noise on some of the bigger message boards. There are the occasional spirited disagreements, but not nearly with the frequency and nastiness that I've seen on places like USCHO.

Thank you, Drew, for that information. I was not surprised to learn that Mark Morris was not a finalist for the head coaching position at RPI because of one major reason......Zach Schwan's father holds a prestigious position at RPI, perhaps in the area of administrative business or computers. In all probability, many things have been discussed with the RPI administratration about the problems which occurred between Mark Morris and Zach Schwan....but that's just my theory.
It is too bad that Mark was not a finalist because he certainly has the credentials, record, and experience to be a great Division I coach. I also believe, though, that hiring Mark would further intensify the rivalry between Clarkson and RPI.
OUR KNIGHTS WILL BE AWESOME.:)
I honestly doubt Zach's dad had one iota to do with it.
just look at facts: *every* job that's been open the past 3 years he has applied for and he has not been a finalist for ONE.
Zach's dad didn't work at all the other schools, Yale included. He would not have been a finalist there, either, even if Zach's dad worked at Union or the University of Albany. He just appears to be blacklisted.

Erik Cole: (Vertebra) Could Return Late in Playoffs
RotoWire.com Staff - RotoWire.com
Monday, April 17, 2006
Update: Hurricanes GM Jim Rutherford believes that Cole (fractured vertebra) may be able to return to action if the team goes deep into the playoffs, according to an interview in the Raleigh News & Observer.
Recommendation: "Deep" in this case probably means at least the conference finals. Rutherford was careful to emphasize that Cole's availability will be decided by physicians, not the coaching staff: "From a team point of view, we will not push him."

INCH has the Knights "Poised for a breakout (http://www.insidecollegehockey.com/7Archives/Features/0506/10teams07_0431.htm)".
USHR is reporting Brown sophomore Adam D’Alba, who has started 54 of Brown’s 65 games over the past two seasons, has hung up his skates and pads with two years of eligibility left.

The Badger Showdown is Wisco, Lake State, and Providence, right?
I think you have a pretty good handle on all the opponents----- dates may not be firm.
So what does everyone think of the OOC schedule this year? Definitely better than years past. Thoughts?

The showdown includes those teams you listed. Unfortunately, UWuss has not done themselves any favors with the selection of teams. Since its inception, the Showdown has been under fire for lack of quality opponents/excitement/attendance. The only way it is good for the Knights is to have 2 W's. (a) for the H2H against either LSSU or Providence; and (b) to beat a certain TUC - UWUSS.
Providence...should be improved....surprised last year in HE.
Miami...will be a quality team...good for PWR
SCSU...potentially good for Tech PWR...dependent on their WCHA record this year - lose 4/5 top scorers plus possibly Goephert...
Niagara...push...neither good nor bad
RIT..see "SLU" : helping another NY team become established.
BGSU...will they be any better this year? Goaltending ???
UMass...Anderson & Werner graduated - good for the Knights. Not much expected from UMASS
LSSU...rebuilding under Roque. Incoming recruits have to perform better than departing seniors - not a good recipe.
Better than years past, though it appears that expectations will be high, with a record of 7-3 in those games, and a win over UWuss or Miami.
Clarkson finally posted the official schedule....Mike, you had the OOC teams perfect.

I don't think many fans like to have their weekdays and weeknights include hockey games. Having weekend hockey games gives us something to look forward to on an otherwise not too exciting weekend. I am wondering if that scheduling was done to accomodate Clarkson's and St. Lawrence's teams being able to face two more opponents on a weekend? Sometimes those two great rivalry games are the only ones played on two different weekends between both teams, leaving one knight free. I think most traveling partners play back-to-back games, but I'm not certain of that.
The two games played between Clarkson and SLU this past season were just too much emotionally for the fans and for the players to deal with because they were played on January 27 and on January 28.
Drew, unfortunately, these are the two games which draw the largest attendance at both universities....no matter when they are played. I'm sorry for all those who will personally miss these emotionally charged contests.

Agreed!!!!
I think that's the exactly the reason Goldie. Scheduling decent OOC teams is increasingly difficult. While they probably could have been able to schedule an Atlantic or CHA team, they probably opted to take the Tuesday games (some of the Boston schools do a Tuesday or Thursday game) to make room for the stronger opponents.
Still, I personally think it's a hit for the economy of the towns when alumni can't make the trip up. This will be the first Clarkson/SLU game I'll have missed since I was a Freshman. The Tuesday game for students will be a double-edged sword. Hopefully students who are normally gone on the weekends will get an opportunity to catch some great hockey, especially Freshman who really need to see the energy of the Clarkson/SLU game to get excited. At the same time, it is the week before dead week, and exams/projects come before hockey, that might keep people in.
That being said, CSTV, ESPNU, someone, pick up the damn game!

Being a fan of any NHL team which has as a player any former Clarkson Golden Knight, I have a question about the Carolina Hurricanes. Let's just assume that the Hurricanes win the Stanley Cup. Am I correct in thinking that each Carolina team member is eligible to have the Stanley Cup in his possession for a day or so during the off season? Therefore, even though Erik Cole may not be able to play during the playoffs, is Erik still eligible to have his "special time" with Lord Stanley's Cup?
Yes, I know this question may be a bit premature, but if there any possibility that Erik and the Stanley Cup could be present at Clarkson University during the summer, it would be an awesome experience for any of us who could be there.

Goldie,
I'm quite sure that Erik could take the Cup for a day. His 'mates all know that he was a big part of the 'Canes getting this far.
And hopefully, he'd be able to take the Cup to reunion when so many more alumni would be present.
I had the opportunity to touch the Cup and have my picture taken with it back in '94 so as a fan, it's a very special privilege!
Although it is premature as you said, it's a nice scenario to look forward to.
GO 'Canes!

SLU game never kept me in studying -- maybe that's why I got to see 10 SLU/Clarkson regular season games, eh?!!!!
:rolleyes:
"To have one's name inscribed on the Stanley Cup, a player must have played at least 41 games for the team during the regular season (provided the player remains with the team when they win the Cup) or a game of the Finals, although the NHL will also permit other reasons on a case-by-case basis."
Erik has 60 games on the regular season. 30-29-59 line. He'll have his day if it happens.

No other place to put this, but SLU's Matt Desrosiers is looking for a job (http://www.lovelandfyi.com/sports-story.asp?ID=5482)
So Desrosiers contacted coach Chris Stewart after this year’s playoffs to announce he would retire. Desrosiers then started pursuing an assistant coaching position at Clarkson University, where his fiance, Shannon Smith, works.
Desrosiers played for Clarkson’s rival, St. Lawrence, in college. That’s where he met Smith. (The two schools are separated by 10 miles.)
Wonder what assistant position he is going for, Mens or Womens? Did not hear of anyone leaving and I would be surprised if either programs finances would allow the hiring of another coach?
MikeR

Vicb, I wondered the same. If a position was open, I'd doubt that he go to the women's team and work with his fiance.
Maybe a volunteer position on the men's team? I see David Evans' name has been removed from the clarksonathletics site.
Brett Gobe

I would guess volunteer. NCAA rules allow one per team. I'm not sure if you are required to be a graduate student of the university to hold the postion, but I know David was a grad student at Clarkson.
Matt Derosiers would be a solid pick up. He was one to watch in Canton and always played well against us. Plus it never hurts to pick up someone 'on the inside.' ;)

If Clarkson can bring Matt on board, they certainly will not regret it. He is an awesome young man and comes from a tremendous family. My all-time favorite SLU team was the '00 - '01 club, largely because Matt Desrosiers, Erik Anderson, and many others were fabulous kids with great parents.
Was in the Canton and Potsdam areas yesterday in a day-long but failed search to find a golden-winged warbler ("GWW") nest to try and photograph. Searched all day and didn't see one GWW in a region that is a GWW nesting hotspot in early-June. My advice to anybody reading this who might aspire to become a bird photographer is don't do it unless you can easily shrug off failures. I guess my being such has made it much easier to be a SLU fan since '01.:) Cornell studies these birds but won't disclose where their nests are because, "I would disturb the birds". Typical Cornell arrogance - I'm sure Cornell's catching and banding these birds puts absolutely no stress of them. What a joke, but doesn't surprise me one bit. The Cornell Lab folks must know I'm an SLU fan :(
Please hire Matt. He was born to be a coach and would be a great asset to Clarkson hockey.

Desrosiers is in the running for an assistant coaching position with the women's hockey team at Clarkson University in Potsdam, N.Y., and he said getting the new job would be his preference.
Desrosiers said he has a couple more interviews to go through and should know whether he will get the job "within a month."
He's hoping to get the coaching job but would consider playing in Broomfield.
"It's probably going to depend on whether I get this job or not," he said. "Jobs like this don't come around that often. ... The money's a lot more than I can make playing hockey."
Here is the article (http://www.coloradoan.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060607/SPORTS/606070323/1006)
dont forget clarkson 'has' a volunteer assistant coach already: Ryan Vinz. He's a student and will be a Sr. this year so he'd have to be 'fired' or lose his title for Desrosiers to come in. Don't believe the NCAA allows more than one volunteer coach per team.

Vic,
If my information is correct, then both former Clarkson assistants, Jason Lammers and Casey Jones, are currently assistant coaches at Ohio State.
One of our daughter's friends in the Tampa area is the former captain of the Ohio State hockey team. Jim has an entire room dedicated to his accomplishments there, including his senior jersey encased in a huge glass frame with wooden borders....what an unbelievable display.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We had our first Booster Club meeting at Cheel on Tuesday. Unfortunately, the doors to the arena were locked, and I was anxious to actually get inside the arena. In fact, the door handles were literally removed from the doors....we all know that will have to change.
Does anyone remember when those coaches' and media polls are published? I am still convinced....no matter what they may indicate....that the Clarkson Golden Knights will be among the top four ECAC teams on Sunday morning, February 25, 2007.
Not stupid at all, looking back I was vague to say the least. As Joe said, Steve is former Knight Rick Tarasuk's son. He was on Clarkson's radar as a potential recruit for 2007 or 2008. He visited Clarkson and played in the hockey alumni golf outing. http://people.clarkson.edu/~mikelg/2005CUHocGolf/
