It will be a tough weekend. Cornell will be very tough. We must score first, given the scoring drought, we need the confidence early. We need to put up a crooked number on the scoreboard in the first period to have any shot at this game.

LET'S GO TECH !!!! LET'S GO TECH!!!

I can promise that the pep band and whatever's left of the student section will be ALL OVER McKee Friday night. A bunch of us are gonna head out and buy aluminum foil and pinwheels for Mr. ADD, number 31. All the cheers that got shut down by the Cornell arena staff are going to be flying in full force, I can't wait.

Prediction for toknight:

CLARKSON.......3 the better dead than red team.......2

I'm thankful some of the students will be at Cheel. It is always fun to watch and listen to those student sections' "performances". And, of course, the Pep Band is vital to the success of the team....every knight.

Spot on. If Cornell takes a lead into the second period you can pretty much write it off. They will put the clamps on us, and with how unlucky we have been lately it could be over by halftime. They need to come out fast and score one early, preferably in the first 5 minutes.

daredevil, you need to have that band rockin' if the our students are missing. I don't think Cornell's band is showing, so you can drown out whatever following they are bringing.

Winning these two games can give us a HUGE momentum swing into the end of the season....and of course losing these two can..........:(

As much as I like the winning formula of scoring first, etc, I don't think it's over if we trail after the first period.

This year's cornell team does not have the same shut down defense of previous years and McKee is not having the same kind of year as he had last year.

But clearly they are playing their best hockey lately and they must feel very confident against us given recent dominance, except for the playoff series 2 years ago.

If Princeton could end a 17 game winless straek against us, we can end our winless RS streak against the red.

I'll be at my HS game tonight but I'll ck the Green Machine immediately afterwards hoping for good news.

Daredevil...your cheering was stopped at Lynah? What happenned to the "free speech" they trumpet down there ? Or is that only for the "foul faithful" ?:D

Be careful, be civil...don't get tossed.

There was an article in the Ithaca Journal about McKee a few months ago. He is dyslexic and has attention deficit disorder. As you may or may not know, he's a "skater" -- that is, during whistle blows he'll skate around a bit, back and forth and whatnot. We were chanting "A D D" at him both when he would skate around and right after Clarkson's two goals. I really think we were getting into his head, because I thought the 2nd goal was soft. We were told late in the period that we could no longer chant ADD because a Cornell fan had ADD and was offended. To quote the rent-a-cop, "I've never seen a Cornell fan that angry about anything in the 10 years I've worked here."

In my opinion, the ADD chant shouldn't be saved for just McKee, though... I say it's good enough to use on any "skater" goalie instead of just "still empty net" and the remote control goalie.

I suggest that you lay off the ADD taunting. That's classless in my opinion; just the sort of stuff that the Lynah crowd would throw at a visting player.

We should be above that. I'm sure you can come up with something clever to try to get into his head. Although, I must say, most solid goalies tune that stuff out. I know I did, and I wasn't a "solid" goalie! :D

Enjoy the game, wish I could be there.

Well, I guarantee we won't be laying off on that, if only because Cornell wouldn't let us do it. What's up on eLynah? Hmm... not sure what you mean. Shoot me an email if you are really worried about it... edsalllj@clarkson.edu

Classless and mean, maybe, but I seem to remember "Your coach beats you." or something to that effect in my sophomore year (the year of the Morris incident) when we went to Lynah. They were the only arena to give us crap for that, so I think turnabout is fair enough play. Besides, ADD isn't nearly as bad as "Jesus Hates You!", which is amazingly hilarious.

Good creativity guys!

Gotta agree here, which is strange for me as when I orginally heard this I thought it was funny.

There is something to be said for fan behavior and decorum. Something that has all but vanished from the college and pro sports scene in recent years. The biggest complaint I hear from everyone about going to Lynah goes along these lines:

"Oh boy, another Clarkson Sucks chant!"
"Have they realized that Nickerson is gone yet?"
"Cornell has no class."

I paraphrased the last one, but I think we all get the point. In my days as a student I would have joined right in, and probably came up with a few choice words for someone with a personal problem, which he has overcome. But now, it just seems petty and stupid. And dare I say below the level of some of the garbage that happens at Lynah, "Golden Showers" and chanting personal cell phone numbers. This is the type of stuff that may seem funny but really is just bush league and really wont have much affect on anyone. Do you really think Dave McKee is going to be distracted because you brought up the fact that he has a learning disability? If he was then I dont think he would still be at Cornell. I think that as a student section you can rise above the personal attacks and come up with something creative without going to the lowest common denominator.

Stemmer

Well, I guarantee we won't be laying off on that, if only because Cornell wouldn't let us do it.

So if the fans at Lynah act like classless jerks, you feel compelled to sink to their level? What does that prove? Better you should direct the energy in a positive way to cheer the home team.

I know the Cheel folks have tossed a few Tech fans in the past for "bad" cheers so don't be surprised if they do so again.

As Brett said above, come up with something more creative. As he alluded to, a player who has overcome that condition to be able to play at a high level is not likely to be bothered by some tasteless heckling. Every D1 player, mostly Clarkson guys, I ever asked about this laughed and said basically, 'I tune out that stuff out. I have to, or I'd lose focus on my job and the game.'

As a goalie I had plenty of "stuff" chanted at me when I played as a grad student and I may have chuckled at the funny ones but it never got under my skin. I couldn't afford to let it, I was a "sieve" on my best day! ;)

I have to say it's interesting that we're having this conversation on here. My fiiance goes to Maine, and one of the things that I have always found astonishing about the Alfond is that they find ways to be a major factor as a crowd, even though they aren't allowed to curse. For the unindoctrinated, who have never been to the Alfond, this includes getting immediately kicked out (rarely will they even give a warning) for cursing......which by their definition extends all the way down to saying the word "suck" or "sucks." Coming from my background at Clarkson, and visiting arenas such as Lynah, and Colgate....I truly was dumbfounded by this the first time. Anyway, the point of the ramble is that while being innappropriately mean, and personal attacks are fun, you can be extremely supportive without them, Gobe is correct.

I see your points, but you have to understand that at this point, I have no control over it. 90% of the band loves it, and can't wait to do it again to make up for us not being allowed to do it at Lynah. It's going to happen at least for this game. If it doesn't go over well, we'll probably end up never using it again.

Well there's no better way to quiet down your own crowd like a bad chant. At least at the SLU game you've got 1500 students to back you up.

Actually, cornell is a pretty easy target for cheers. Just a few ideas off the top of my head:

Let 'em know you've been in their backyard - "Hey cornell! The Chapter House called! They said..."

Go Monty Python on them - when they do that "diiiieee...." cheer they so love, chant "Not dead yet! Not dead yet!"

Welcome them to reality - there is a popular bumper sticker in this part of central NY that says "Ithaca - Ten square miles surrounded by reality." And it's the truth. Make sure they know that.

Go baseball on them - another one of their favs is one guy yelling "Clarkson" and the rest of their crew yelling "SUCKS!" While their one guy is yelling "Clarkson," yell "YANKEES!"

Ask them where THEIR Olympians are! (Oh right, retired or thinking about it)

Or, you could just thank them for expanding Section O at lynah so we can bring even more of our fans next year :D

OK, so maybe these ideas are a little lame. I don't have the energy of being at the game to draw from. Maybe next Saturday. (And yeah, I've done a few things at games I'm not proud of, either)

defycornell,
Todd

But every once in a while, the goalie gives you the finger, or slaps his stick towards the band, or something equivalent...its worth it. And also, as the band, the more time the opposeing fans are harassing you, the less they are paying attention to the game, and rooting on their own team.

Wow, that was quite possibly the most fun I've ever had at a hockey game in Cheel. We were in the middle of playing Blues Brothers, and I heard the announcement "Now in goal for Cornell..." and I lost it. I stopped playing, and I was screaming like a MADMAN I was so excited. It took me the better part of two minutes to convince people that the person in goal was not McKee. At Cornell, I said we were going to chase him at Cheel... I never expected it to actually happen.

Sounds like it was a solid win. Now they need to have another strong effort tom'w. Team needs to find some consistency in their effort and no better time than now.

Hockey hat trick for me tonite. My HS team won (only our second W all year), Rangers won...and a Tech victory too!

I call that a great night.

Call it what you want, he still started and came off. And allowed 2 (should've been 3) goals on 5 shots, both of which were incredibly soft. It's only the second time in his college career that he has been pulled, so I'm going to call it chasing him anyway.

Fair enough, sounds like he "left" because he wasn't playing well, whatever the reason. Certainly a smart move by schafer if the kid was sick.

Now it's Tech's job to "chase" the Colagte goalie, sick or not!

daredevil, what's up on elynah? Email me.

I'll comment from a personal perspective in that I do have a physical "disability" (I hate that word - one's only "disabled" if one thinks that way). Since I went to SLU, many here would probably expand this to a mental "disability" :).

My Sr. year at the Clarkson Arena (before it was Walker) and while walking across the resurfaced ice (which is absolute murder to walk on - wish I was instead skating at that point) to the SLU bench with all the SLU sticks in hand, a few Clarkson fans picked up on my limp and starting taunting me. What did I do, in my infinite wisdom, you might ask? I gave them the universal salute (and should have been kicked off the SLU team for doing so).

Had I been older and mature, I'd have laughed the whole thing off (and joined those doing the taunting for some beer(s) after the game). What those fans did that night I took personally back then. I now realize that such behavior, while probably inappropriate, was done by only a few fans, and that s*** happens when you're on the road. As for my behavior, I got my butt reemed but didn't get kicked off the team. :)

Oh, what knight....

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE HARD-WORKING GOLDEN KNIGHTS ON THEIR STELLAR PERFORMANCE.....CORNELL WAS RANKED #3 IN THE NATION.

This was an excellent and very determined effort by the entire team. The Golden Knights were practicing just what their coaches had instructed them to do throughout this past week. Cornell's shots on goal in the first period were 8; in the second period were 5; in the third period were 11....with David Leggio stopping all but one of those shots. The Golden Knights began stepping in front of shots and picking up the Cornell player's sticks. In the third period, Cornell played with no one in their goal for 2 minutes and 13 seconds, and that helped to improve their shots on goal numbers.

Coach Mike Shafer replaced David McKee after the first period. According to Shafer, McKee had the flu all week and had not practiced; nonetheless, McKee thought he was ready to play, but he obviouisly was not. Shafer also noted that if McKee isn't any better today, then the other goaltender, Louis Chabot, will play against SLU.

It was an honor for Tyrell Mason to score his first goal of the season against Cornell. His helpers were Shea Guthrie and Michael Grenzy. Tyrell appeared in the Barben Rooms sporting that colorful yellow hard hat, given to the player who works the hardest during the game. Jeff Genovy scored Clarkson's second goal, again with the assists being given to Shea Guthrie and Michael Grenzy. That's where the second period scoring ended.

Just who would you think would score the third Clarkson goal to literally end Cornell's hopes of a victory? Of course, you probably guessed Nick Dodge, with an assist from his linemate, David Cayer. With his normal burst of speed, Nick zoomed by the Cornell defenseman, beating him by a step or two, before he drove the black bullet into the top right-hand side of the net.

David Leggio was named the first star of the game for his outstanding and sometimes brilliant work in the Clarkson net. What a comeback from that maddening loss to the Q's the week before. Nick Dodge was the second star, and Tyrell Mason was the third star. Cornell apparently had NO STARS.:D

MOMENTUM AND CONFIDENCE....MAY YOU CARRY THE GOLDEN KNIGHTS ON TO VICTORY TOKNIGHT AGAINST COLGATE.....IN FACT,

BURN COALGATE.:)

I just got back from the North Country and had a great weekend. I have a few comments about the band and the fans, but first. Thank you knights for beating Cornell! What a fun game to watch.

I didn't hear the ADD chant and wouldn't have understood it if I did. My favorite chant of the weekend was after Dodge scored the goal against the JV goalie. The band chanted "IT'S ALL MCKEE'S FAULT!".

It's kind of sad though, to see the rest of the rink. Very many empty seats and no cheering outside of the student section. I actually had people turn around in section 19A and give me a dirty look because I was yelling "Let's go Tech!" too loudly. This happened 3 times over the weekend!?!? I never had the pleasure of being at a game in Walker but I can't imagine this happening there. It wouldn't have even happened the first few years of Cheel's existence. Nobody claps with "Let's go Tech!" and as soon as the drums stop beating the chant dies. I'm probably too old to come home from a game and talk more about the croud and the chants than the game itself but it's sad what it has come to up there. Will the passion ever be back?

Chuck,

You now know where Section 22 is located....right above the enemy's penalty box. The next time you have a chance to come up to Cheel Arena, please consider requesting seats there. The folks in that section are very accustomed to loud cheering....and naturally, your help is always welcome.

Glad to hear that you got home safely with your family. It is a clear, crisp winter evening without any snow here yet. Poor Rich and Vic, and maybe even Mr. Cool, have shoveled snow for way too long today.

By the way, the bus trip from Princeton back to Potsdam was a bummer. The bus had to stop every hour or so to add some antifreeze.....it arrived back in Potsdam about 6 AM February 5.

HERE'S TO A FOUR-POINT CLARKSON WEEKEND FEBRUARY 17 AND 18.:)
