View Full Version : Clarkson @ The Capitol District
Another tough week coming up. I expect 2 close games but I also expect nothing less than 4 points. If this team is gonna contend for a top 4 spot, they gotta beat the teams below them at home (you only got 3 gentlemen) and on the road.
Union goes out to Minnesota and gets clobbered by the goofers and then turns around and ties Hahvad and Dartmouth.
RPI is RPI. Win when they should not (Hahvad) and lose when they should not (Holy Cross). Go figure.
Gonna need good goaltending and gotta stay out of the box. LGT. My predictions later this week ;) .

Gotta figure that since it has happened twice out of two times this year, that maybe ... just maybe ... RPI should be losing to HC after all.

I don't know if anyone has mentioned the hockey polls which were announced Monday, January 9. But the news is very encouraging for Clarkson's Golden Knights.
The USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Men's College Hockey Poll lists Clarkson as lucky Number 13.
USCHO has us placed at Number 14 in the country.
How long has it been since we have had rankings like these? Don't you just love it?
I also read that Union's leading goal scorer will not be a member of the hockey team this semester due to academic difficulties. This must be all about timing as the Golden Knights arrive at Union Friday.
DEFEAT THE DUTCHMEN.:)

Guess what? Two wins on a weekend including a smack-down of an arch-rival ... can just as easily be followed by two losses at the hands of two teams you should beat.
Let's not be licking our chops just yet. If the Knights come away with four points, OK, I will start to be a believer. But they have not yet demonstrated that kind of consistency. And it will be hard as heck to get them to work hard this week after the SLU game.
Nothing less than four points should constitute success for this weekend. The bar is high.

I can't see any reason why it should be hard to get the guys to work as hard this weekend.
Both teams have given us a lot of trouble in recent years; that should be motivation enough to get them stoked to work HARD for two wins. And you know George wants to get his first W over RPI.
Doesn't every Techer want to beat RPI just as much as they want to beat Slu?
I'm hoping to get there but still am not positive I can. Who's gonna be there and where are y'all meeting?
My predictions later this week ;) .
Here they are:
Clarkson 3 Union 1
Clarkson 3 RPI 2

Hey Rich,
There is some information on the Clarkson website, Alumni section, which lists the gathering spots. After the game against RPI, there is a function at the Malt River Brewing Company, Latham Circle Mall, 800 New Loudon Road, Site 697, Latham, NY. The team will be in attendance there prior to returning to Potsdam to meet and greet the fans.....let's hope it will be to celebrate a huge four-point weekend victory party. We will be there, as we are staying in Latham for the weekend. I believe the function on Friday is held prior to the Union game, and that is also on the website, but please check the website to be sure. Hope to see you and Mr. Cool there, as well as many other Clarkson fans. At least this year, we are not the designated opponent for the Big Red Freakout....talk about being outnumbered...oh my goodness.
The news is great concerning Steve Zalewski....he has recovered from his concussion, which caused him to miss three games, and Steve will be playing this weekend.
According to Captain Chris Breckelmans, league play is very exciting....it's tough, and the team has to work harder to get a win. Chris feels the team is ready, and they know what they have to do. They have had all week to practice and prepare for these games, as classes did not commence until today.
I would suspect due to Clarkson's overall record of 12 wins, 6 losses, and 2 ties, which has dramatically improved from last year at this time, the Golden Knights should do well. This team definitely has the ability to earn four points....let's all hope they do....because they need to.
OUR KNIGHTS ARE AWESOME.:)

Goldie,
Thanks for the info, I had read about the post game sat eve before.
IF I come, it will be for Sat only as I have a HS game to coach here toknight. Need to get back (2 hrs plus) on Sat eve and have an early morning youth game Sunday.
Still hoping I can find a buddy to ride/drive with tomorrow. Might be a lst minute decision but will look for you if and when I get there.
You should come down "south" to Princeton! Looks like we'll have a nice crowd of Techers there on Feb. 4!
:)
Here they are:
Clarkson 3 Union 1
Ugh. Should have known. Friday the 13th.
The Good
Union's Mayotte
Union taking advantage of their chances including 2 empty net goals.
The not so good
14 sec into the game wierd bounce and Union is up 1-0
2 min later Unions scores on a breakaway 2-0
Way too many penalties
Could not bury numerous chances
Now been shut out in 2 straight league games, 3rd shut out this year  .
Well, better luck tomorrow at RPI.

No...but it ain't gonna be easy. RPI and Fridgen have confidence against us...which they didn't, for years.

Sniff, sniff, sniff ... I smell someone eating a large slice of humble pie fresh from the oven.
How many times have we seen this in college hockey??
It should not surprise us. It happens all the time which is why I suggested that it could happen this weekend.
LGT!!! The Knights need at the very least two points this weekend. It won't be easy.

Once again I refer us to:
"Hard work beats talent when talent doesn't work hard."
We didn't work hard, that was clear from watching the webcast. George said it as well, though not in as many words.
Not working and a hot goalie against usually adds up to a loss.
We need better "math" tonight. Late night travel forecast for the trip back to NJ is not good so I'll likely not make the trip.
Sorry guys...hope to see you in Albany in March.
Or...come down to Princeton on Feb 4...we have room! :D
Unbelieveable. Another lost weekend in the Capital District. This was very disappointing.
The Good
Periods 1 and 3
The line of Dodge Cayer and Sullivan getting all the points.
The not so good
Period 2  4 goals given up.
Again way too many penalties.
The officiating crew especially one of the linesmen just screwed the crap out of us. Also screwed RPI but not to the same extent.
What has happened to Weller, Zalewski and Guthrie? They absolutely did not show up this weekend.
Well, if anything it gets worse next weekend, At Cornell and Colgate.

What is wrong with this team in the second period?
For the year
First +2
Second -2
Third +12
They just took a 20 minute nap tonight and couldnt scrape up enough to come back. If they play like this next weekend we're in for a long weekend.
On the silver lining their still 5-4-1 in league play and 2 points behind Cornell and Dartmouth for 4th. Lots of time for them to find themselves and figure it out.
After tonight:
1 St. Lawrence 16 10 8- 2- 0
2 Colgate 15 10 7- 2- 1
Harvard 15 14 7- 6- 1
4 Cornell 13 10 6- 3- 1
Dartmouth 13 12 6- 5- 1
6 Rensselaer 11 10 4- 3- 3
Clarkson 11 9 5- 4- 1
8 Union 10 10 4- 4- 2
9 Princeton 9 14 4- 9- 1
Yale 9 11 4- 6- 1
11 Quinnipiac 8 15 4-11- 0
12 Brown 6 10 2- 6- 2

There must be something wrong with your sniffer. I'm on a diet and can't eat any pie.
The Knights will go UNDEFEATED for the rest of the ECACHL regular season! At worst they will lose 3 more games.
They learned their lesson this week and will be unstoppable.
See you in Albany!!!

Well, it definitely has been a slow and difficult recovery getting over last weekend's disasters. There were two highlights for us.
1. Meeting Mr. Cool for the first time at the Alumni gathering in Latham. What a wonderful young man...we certainly enjoyed conversing with him. His love of Clarkson hockey was very apparent.
2. After listening to a few of those obnoxious Union fans for nearly all of the game, we had left our seats and stood directly beside the goal judge, whose little house was behind Union's goaltender. Both my husband and I actually saw the puck go into the net for Clarkson's first goal. It was in absolute horror that we watched the goal judge turn the red light on indicating the Clarkson goal, and then within seconds, he turned it off. The man had a hearing aid, and after countless screams, he must have turned it off. Evidently, he did not need to listen to our positive comments about the reality of that goal. The puck was hit into the net so fiercely that it caromed off the back of the net and back out again. The goal judge then was escorted by a member of Union's campus security, one quarter of the way around the rink, to converse with the referee. Together they must have agreed to disallow Clarkson's only goal of the weekend. In addition to the goal judge being hard of hearing, he apparently had limited vision too. Why do I bother mentioning this.....because Clarkson was given a shutout....when they should have been credited with one goal....and it matters to us. The replay must have shown the Clarkson goal, as fans told us the next night that Clarkson really did score in the waning minutes of Period 3.
On another note, those Cornell fans are still discussing Matt Nickerson on their elynah forum. It's too bad Matt isn't still here to enforce better codes of conduct on some of our opponents.;)
LET'S HOPE FOR MUCH BETTER CLARKSON RESULTS THIS WEEKEND in Hamilton and in Ithaca.:)

Goldie,
1) "a wonderful young man"? Boy does he have YOU fooled...just kidding...Cool and I have conversed both in person and via email many times and yes his love for Tech hockey is way up there!
2) re: the disputed goal. Yeah that's always a bummer but we had many chances to get back into that game and didn't. I wouldn't cite the lost goal has a major factor in the loss.
3) the obsession that some folks have on elynah with Matt N, who has been gone since 2004 is laughable. The same tired old references and tasteless jokes. Only one word comes to mind to describe that..."pathetic."
Unfortunately I'm not able to make my almost-annual trip to Lynah this weekend but I imagine that those in attendance will hear more of the fixation with Matt.

Cool,
Neither actually because Tech's allotment of tix has sold out.
However, click on the link below for the info re: the game and event. The # of the PU box ofc ithe bottom and I'm confident they still have seats available. Just don't tell them you're a Tech fan or they may tell you to wait until the week of the game before they'll sell em to you...they have done that before.
In all the years I've been going to Baker, the only time I ever had to buy SRO tix is when they hosted No Dak a few years ago when they had the over-hyped freshman (and current devil....GRRRRRR....Zach Parise) and when they hosted, yep, you guessed it....Notre Dame. The joint was packed on both occasions, esp for the Irish with all their "subway alumni." :D
http://www.clarkson.edu/alumni/events/event_details.php?id=82
Also on the link is the option to pay for the pre-game at the Clarion Hotel down Rt One from PU. If you have any questions about that, email Jill Theimann whose email is on the alumni announcement as well.
As for the 1:30 am appearance, I hear ya...I've had more than a few of those nights but not many since I left CCT. :D
Vic, I talk with Ernie almost weekly and he's making noise about not coming. He had planned to but when his pharmacist, who drives him, became unavailable for that night, he told me he was thinking of not going. You may recall that he took a spill last winter and got cut up on his face quite a bit just before the game and had to go to the hospital to be treated. So now he's leery about coming.
I told him that I suspect that the accident happened because he had his eyes on the Princeton coeds on Nassau Street rather than on the sidewalk. I also offered to try to find him a ride from home to Princeton with someone who lives near him but so far, no luck. We'll have to see if he changes his mind.
Meantime, he had oral surgery earlier this week and a couple of ongoing things so we should continue to keep him in our prayers.
For those of you who don't know Ernie Richmond, he's now 90 but still pretty darn spry and very quick-witted. I'll let y'all know what he tells me this weekend when I speak with him.
Stemmer, I think I am going to come down to princeton....Do I get tix thru you or the Alum Assoc. ?
I always buy my tickets directly from Princeton (in Nov/Dec). My wife and I go every year. I don't remember ever seeing it packed for the Princeton game there.
Vic

Sorry Joe, my wife and I have an agreement. We go early and make a day of it. She gets to go shopping before and I get to go to the game so car pooling is out.
