I watched the MSG presentation of the Rangers v. Oilers game last night and the commentators (Sam Rosen and John Davidson) had good things to say about Todd Marchant.
They mentioned a little about his history, being from upstate New York and Clarkson "College" and about how he was a Rangers draft pick traded in 1994 for Craig MacTavish (ironic that Craig is now the Oilers coach).
They praised Todd's staying power in the NHL. They mentioned how, despite his size, he was one of the strongest centers in the NHL, and has always been one of the fastest. They said that the Rangers powers-that-be in 1994 didn't think much of his prospects as an NHL player and praised his determination and efforts that have kept him in the NHL this long and how he has developed into such a solid player.
Those of us who remember Todd playing for Clarkson shouldn't at all see this as a suprise. Way to go Todd.

Right on! I saw and heard that too. I recall that Sam R has ALWAYS been a fan of Todd's since he has been in the NHL. Funny thing is that somewhere here at home, I have a tape of Todd's only game as a NY Ranger...it was verssus Chicago, incl Steve Dubinsky at MSG. Todd was traded only a day or two later!
Also, for at least the next three seasons, I heard Neil Smith, th eRangers GM who made the deal, say that he regretted having to give Todd up...but knew he had too to get MAcTavish who was HUGE in the playoffs for them.
I'm a Ranger season ticket holder and I cant tell you how many times I hear fans at MSG say how much they wish the Rangers still had Todd! The Rangers lack of speed in recent years has been appalling...until they got Dvorak of course.
Todd has had a solid NHL career....was hoping he'd make the Olympics this time but...

olympic team selection is incredibly political(at least for ski racing anyway). most people have no idea...
As I remember, Todd left us (after his sophomore year,I think) to go to the olympic team, and he may have been on two of them, so he's probably looking forward to the time off. He can still skate with the fastest in the NHL, and I always enjoy watching Todd and Edmonton -- especially on the excellent ice at the SkyReach (Northlands).

Yes, he left after two years at Tech, played in the '94 Olympics, and then immediately signed with the Rangers. He played a handful of games with their AHL affiliate, then in Binghamton, NY (my hometown, and Vic's too!), then came up to the Rangers when they had a bunch of injuries. He played one game and then was traded to Edmonton where he has been since!

Not to get too excited about but Marchant scored an ENG saturday as the oilers beat toronto 4-1. Rack up the points todd!
Detroit announcers quoted Todd tonight as saying McTavish has not been happy with his game this year. I know he has really been struggling the last 20 games or so, but did not realize he was in trouble with McTavish all year..... Wonder what happens next?????

Its ironic that Todd was traded by the Rangers for mac back in '94!
The Rangers PK has been so bad all year...I'd love to see him come back!:D
