View Full Version : Clarkson - SLU game 1
The Saints are currently on a 3 game winning streak against the Knights including a good old fashioned 7-2 butt whipping they gave us at Cheel last year. Nothing but pride on the line in this non-leaguer in Ottawa. Number of interesting factors in this one:
Common opponents:
SLU beat Vermont, Dartmouth, UMass and tied Miami all teams Clarkson lost to.
SLU beat RPI, Clarkson tied
Clarkson beat Hahvad, Bowling Green teams SLU lost to.
Advantage SLU.
Clarkson plays Friday Knight, SLU is off Friday.
Advantage SLU
Injuries:
Not sure who is out or coming back. I know SLU was missing Bagnall, Ackley and Zeiler. Clarkson may be missing Zalewski???? Anyone know?
Advantage: Clarkson
SLU will not have played since Dec 17th.
Advantage Clarkson
SLU on a 3 game winning streak and know they can beat us. Clarkson motivated to end the losing streak.
Advantage: None
So I give the advantage to SLU. SLU 3 Clarkson 1. Now go out and prove me wrong guys ;) . LGT.

Well, Vic, it must have darn near devastated you to give our adversary the advantage of defeating Clarkson Saturday. Your statistics back up your statements though.
We are returning to NY State today, so I expect to know more about Steve's concussion later this week. That poor guy...with 15 stitches...I have serious doubts about his being able to play at the Corel Centre.
The USCHO poll is completed, and here is the ranking of the ECAC teams this week.
#8 Cornell
#11 St. Lawrence
#12 Colgate
#14 Harvard
#18 CLARKSON, dropping from #15 the previous week.
Let's hope the team is tired enough of losing and turns things around this weekend. And, I need not add, but I will, no more punishments....nothing but good behavior from all the Golden Knights please.:)

Something important on the line besides pride:
Show that you can beat a good team, especially away from home! We need to do that to gain respect of future opponents and perhaps put a bit of fear into some of them. The respect and fear that Tech teams used to draw!
Prove it to yourselves and build the confidence and maturity levels!

As expected, Steve Zalewski will NOT be playing at the Corel Centre against SLU this Saturday, nor against RIT at Cheel on Friday. Having suffered a concussion and numerous stitches, that decision is absolutely understandable. Coach Roll felt that Steve will completely recover, hopefully in time for the RPI ~ Union series on January 13 and 14 in the Albany area. Any thoughts on who will replace Steve at center this weekend?
The Golden Knights are hard at work practicing for the first games of this new year. What happens in the next two months will determine where the Golden Knights will play in March....every point Clarkson can earn will be vital.
According to Grant Clitsome, Ottawa is providing a lot of publicity for this Saturday's game at the Corel Centre; the game has a 2 PM start. There have even been television commercials with short segments of games between Clarkson and SLU, as well as radio and newspaper ads. Both Grant and Jamie McKinven are from that area. The team is very excited about being able to play in an NHL rink.
GOOD LUCK TO THE CLARKSON GOLDEN KNIGHTS THIS WEEKEND.:)
Shea Guthrie and Mike Willemsen are also from the Ottawa area. And yes there has been tons of advertising in Ottawa and the Ottawa Valley. The newspapers, radio stations,T.V. stations and even on the big screen at the Senators home games.
I believe the turnout will be great. There are busloads of people going just from Shea's hometown not including all the other local area's. It should be an interesting afternoon.

Sounds like some really good PR. Should be a great time. I do wish that the game in Ottawa coincided with the Ottawa Winterfest. I went to that one time way back and it was a great time. I most definately would make the trip up from Massachusetts if they were at the same time... Maybe next year.
Let's go Tech!

Sounds like great publicity for the school and the team, can't hurt in recruiting as well.
Excellent opportunity for many of the Canadian players friends and family to see the kids play closer to home....gotta believe the local kids would like to put on a great show for them as well.
This year I will attend Yale, Quinnipiac, Union, RPI, road games and heading up to P'dam to see Cornell and Colgate....If I even mention the Ottawa trip I will get served divorce papers.;)

Too bad Whitey is not still with the Sens. He's from Kanata where the Corel Centre is and if I recall correctly, he helped provide some pub a couple years ago when Tech played 'Gate in Ottawa.
Any win over Slu is a great win.
Just win baby! :)

Okay Cool, so I guess that means you're blowing off the Princeton game, eh? See if I take you to a Ranger game again! LOL...
hey, I totally understand as I'm sure if you went to Q and then Princeton the next night, you'd get those "papers."
Hmmm...I may just try to go up to Q with you that Friday and then P the next night myself.

JCG,
Thanks for mentioning our other two Golden Knights who live near Ottawa. I didn't know where Stittsville and Carleton Place were in relation to Ottawa, but I do know both Shea and Mike. In fact, the Booster Club sponsored a dinner for the Golden Knights in Potsdam last knight, and I spoke with both of these young men. I had to laugh when Shea mentioned there were probably some people coming to the game to cheer for him that he didn't even know. I think the team will greatly appreciate the fan support from both Canadians and Americans. We are all looking forward to a great afternoon of college hockey at the Corel Centre Saturday.
Mr. Cool,
We will look forward to finally meeting you in person at the RPI and Union games. It is terrific that you will be able to attend both games. We are easily recognizable as we always wear lots of green and gold--is there any other decent color?
LET'S GO TECHERS....ON TO TWO VICTORIES THIS WEEKEND.:)
They're going to get it together, finally.
KNIGHTS 3, SLU 2.

So, it's off to Ottawa to defeat the SLUzers this afternoon. I think Kyle McNulty will be the goal tender today. The only prediction I feel comfortable making is all about a CLARKSON VICTORY. I suspect the game will be a low-scoring one.
CHEER LOUDLY EVERYONE....WE WANT TO HEAR YOU IN THE OTHER COUNTRY.
TAINT THE SAINTS.....LET'S GO CLARKSON....ON TO VICTORY TODAY.:)
WHOOO WHOOO
So I give the advantage to SLU. SLU 3 Clarkson 1. Now go out and prove me wrong guys ;) . LGT.
Well I guess they did :) . Unfortunately had too many other things to do to listen to the game.
The good:
Saints win streak against us is over
Congrats to the goal scorers: Sullivan (2), Genovy, Weller, Kolu, and Cayer
Every forward except one guy gets a point.
The not so good:
My prediction ;)
On to the Capitol District next weekend. We owe RPI big time and Union is always tough on us at their rink.

The not so good:
My prediction ;)
Also...allowing 9 PPs. That will get you in big trouble in most games.
Overall, great win against a quality opponent. This should raise the emotion by a quantup leap for the H and H series at the end of this month.
The not so good:
My prediction ;)
Yeah Vic, my 3-2 prediction wasn't much good either, but it least I got the W right!!!:D
Next weekend's road will be the next big test -- Knights need to win both, period.
LGT!!!

Many thanks, Mark, for showing us Clarkson's third uniforms. Contrary to some rather insulting remarks yesterday from non-Clarkson fans, I thought these uniforms were stunning. It was interesting to learn that these uniforms were worn in a recent game when Clarkson played at Miami of Ohio on December 10. They will also be worn on February 10 when the Golden Knights play at home against the little red team from Cornell.
The jersey's design is similar to the ones worn from 1922 ~ 1926, when Clarkson's name was Clarkson College of Technology. The front of these uniform bears the letters......T E C H......with an enlarged capital letter C between those four letters. Maybe with such an admirable effort yesterday followed by a vivacious victory over SLU, the Golden Knights should wear these uniforms throughout the remainder of the season.:) However, they are scheduled to be sold in a silent auction after the Cornell game. More later.
WHAT A WEEKEND FOR CLARKSON HOCKEY...THANK YOU COACHES AND GOLDEN KNIGHTS.:)

Although we are still overwhelmed with the excitement of defeating St. Lawrence at the Corel Centre yesterday, it's time to acknowledge the Golden Knights for their outstanding victory.
Having never attended a function at the Corel Centre, we were most impressed with the beautiful accommodation that hosts the Ottawa Senators. As the game began, there was such an unusual feeling which permeated our thoughts. Basically, the size of the building was much larger than any we had ever been in. It seemed that the spaciousness contributed to the strange feeling of being in a place where fans were spread out all over the place. However, as the game began, we were able to concentrate on the focus the Golden Knights had established. Except for the five Clarkson penalties in the first period, (SLU only had two), the game progressed remarkably well for Clarkson. It was a pleasure to see Shea Guthrie skating around, as we had hoped he would be playing. The score at the end of Period 1 was Clarkson 2 and SLU...oh well...zero.
Period 2 saw the Golden Knights add four more insurance goals, serve only three penalties, and shut out SLU for the second consecutive period. Kyle McNulty played brilliantly, stopping all 22 shots made against him in two periods. The score at the end of Period 2 was Clarkson 6 and SLU...still zero.
Period 3 brought the bad news that Clarkson would not shut out SLU, as SLU scored on a power play during the first minute. Five minutes later, SLU scored again, ending their total goals for the day at two.
The intense rivalry continues between these two teams. Clarkson fans didn't appreciate TJ Trevelyan's hit to the head against Philippe Paquet near the end of the game, and I don't imagine Phillipe was very happy about that nasty hit either. SLU was absolutely frustrated by their inability to play hockey very well....and it showed in the performance.
Anyway, the final score, CLARKSON 6 and SLU 2, was a testimony and a tribute to how well the Golden Knights played as a team. Here are the goal scorers and their assistants.
1. David Cayer...from Nick Dodge and Grant Clitsome.
2. Max Kolu....from Mike Arciero and Mike Willemsen (who earned his first collegiate point.
3. Mike Sullivan....from David Cayer and Nick Dodge.
4. Mike Sullivan again....from Nick Dodge and Michael Grenzy.
5. Shawn Weller from Shea Guthrie and Michael Grenzy.
6. Jeff Genovy....from Chris D'Alvise and Grant Clitsome.
Even though the game does not count in the ECAC standings, it surely does count in the PWR and in the establishment of self confidence for the Golden Knights.
WE ARE VERY PROUD OF OUR GOLDEN KNIGHTS.:)

FWIW, when RPI auctioned off its third jerseys this year, two were auctioned on eBay, #6 which would have been worn by Jake Schuster who left the team early in the season and #13 Kirk MacDonald's jersey.

Before I make any commitments, I would like to find out exactly how and where these auctions will be conducted. Let me talk with some people this weekend in Albany to discover the financial details and procedure that would be involved.
Many parents of Golden Knights travel to Cheel Arena for home games, and they may be very interested in bidding on their son's jersey too. I will let you all know as soon as I find out anything definite.
Ralph, do you remember about how much those RPI jerseys sold for on eBay? I honestly don't have any idea how expensive they even are.
A while ago when Shawn Frazier was still the AD, the Clarkson Athletics Department, via the internet, auctioned off a variety of Clarkson sports items, and I was fortunate in placing the high bid on a new three-foot long Clarkson hockey logo. I didn't even know the value of the item, but I did know I wanted it because of its rarity. I found out later from a very reliable source that I got a bargain for $44.44!
The second semester begins on Thursday, and that's the afternoon the Golden Knights leave for their trip to Albany.
Mr. Cool, did you know there is an alumni gathering after the RPI game on Saturday? It is to be held in Latham, and all the Golden Knights will be there. Additional information is listed on Clarkson's Alumni website.

Goldie,
The #6 jersey went for $455.01 and was won by Jayson Moy. http://cgi.ebay.com/RPI-Hockey-Black-Friday-Jersey-6_W0QQitemZ8724083005QQcategoryZ780QQssPageNameZWD VWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
The #13 jersey went for $2,475. http://cgi.ebay.com/RPI-Hockey-Black-Friday-Jersey-13_W0QQitemZ8724088734QQcategoryZ780QQssPageNameZW DVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
The proceeds went to charity which I am sure influenced the bidding a lot.

Thanks, Ralph, for that information. Just in contrast, I spoke earlier this season with a Clarkson student who was wearing former Golden Knight Matt Nickerson's jersey. He had won the jersey in an auction at Cheel, and he paid about $150 for it.
Congratulations to our ECAC Honor Roll recipients this week:
David Cayer, scoring two goals and earning two assists this past weekend
and
Nick Dodge who scored one goal and earned four assists.
Nick currently has the ECAC record for short-handed goals, scoring three and getting an assist on another. He is an amazing player. Nick analyzes an on-ice situation, processes his plan of action, and takes off to take care of business....all within a few seconds. Nick is Clarkson's leading point getter with ten goals and sixteen assists.
No question about this...it is an exciting time to be a Clarkson hockey fan.

I hope the student with the Nickerson jersey wears it at Lynah this year. The crowd their "loved" Matt! :D
I've seen Nick Dodge play a few times and he clearly makes decisions and Takes off in LESS than a few seconds. I wish I could get my HS players to read a play that fast!
