Let's not also forget the women kick off their season tonight at Vermont. I'll be away this weekend hoping to come back Sunday night to read about some big Clarkson wins. Let's Go Tech!
WOW. That was ugly. To sum it up, bad defense and lack of putting away numerous scoring chances cost the Knights this one.
The good: This team I think is gonna be good despite this start
Rutherglen with 3 assists
Genovy, Brekelmans and Kolu the goal scorers
D'Alvis and Paquet their first collegiate points
The not so good:
The defense
Not being able to put away way too many good chances.
Not sure if Leggio was really at fault in goal.
Game 2 today at 2. LGT, PLEASE.

from the wdt (http://www.watertowndailytimes.com/article.php?article_id=15553)
"We created a lot of (offensive) chances, but we had some major breakdowns defensively," Roll said. "(Goalie David Leggio) played very well tonight, but we didn't give him a lot of support. If we're going to have success this year, I think our offense will take care of itself, but we've got to be way more committed defensively. It's something that is a cause for concern."
Vic, I agree with your assessment, this team will be good. 52 shots, while in the 1st game, is promising. Especially compared to the anemic offensive production produced in recent years. Hopefully the defense tightens up, without losing the offensive pressure.
Looks like the Knights have another faceoff guy in Chris D'Alvise, who went 14-7 (http://www.purpleeagles.com/uploads/files/niam10-07.htm).
in other news...
Tech women won 3-1 over Vermont. LGT!

Thanks Vic! I thought the game was at 7P again tonight. I'm glad I read your post before turning on the tube to watch a college football game. Now I'll go relax and listen to Clarkson get it's first win of the new season!:)
WHOOO WHOOO. Well if this weekend is any indication of the rest of the season, I'm not gonna be alive much longer. What a jeckel and hyde performance.
The good
This offense is gonna be something. I don't think we have had an offense with the potential of this one since Todd and JF were seniors.
The not so good
This defense and discipline (penalties) leave a lot to be desired.
Congrats on the win guys.

Great win! LGT!!! They have some "O"!!
Paquet with a +3, Cayer with the 5 shots and a goal and 2 assists, Guthrie with 6 shots and a goal, Genovy with a great week-end, Grenzy solid on the blueline, Arciero with the GWG, Dodge winning 13/18 faceoffs, PK shutting down 8 straight, McNulty....ah heck...great team win!
Full box (http://www.purpleeagles.com/uploads/files/niam1008.htm)
Three stars:
1. David Cayer
2. Mike Arciero
3. Kyle McNulty
Just a couple of things. While we were 1-1 this weekend, the team did get 8 goals and had 79 shots on goal. ALL LAST YEAR only 2 weekends did we score more than 8 goals and ALL LAST YEAR the only weekend that we had more shots than this weekend was the Union playoff series (and it took 3 games). There were 7 weekends last year where Clarkson was held to under 50 shots in 2 games. Tighten up the d and for GOD SAKES control those penalties  . I think the offense will be just fine. Next up Providence and Lowell.
not to be a downer, i DO think offense looks better, but dont forget, this was a CHA team. ECAC teams will play tigher (dirty) defense and make getting shots off much harder.

And I will counter that with the CHA is a better league than most people want to give credit to. Ask Minn Duluth who was SWEPT this weekend by Bemidji St, ask Michigan Tech who split with Mercyhurst and ask Union who was walloped by Air Force. Yep, Niagara is not a top 20 team but again comparing this to last years HOME split with Niagara (5-3L and 4-3W), we got 1 more goal and we improved tremendously on the shots, 79 vs 48 shots that entire weekend.
I for one am excited about the offense. From listening to the game it sounded to me like this is not a 1 line team. Heck our supposed best line of Zalewski, Weller and Guthrie only managed 1 goal and 1 assist. That to me is a great story. We got scoring from all the classes and all the lines. The freshman can definitely play.
Now the coaching staff has to figure out:
1)How to rein in the feistyness in this team. There were way too many penalties plus Breklemans gets tossed for a hit from behind and will miss the next game.
2) How to get this team to play their positions on defense. Defensively especially in game 1 our goalies were hung out to dry on way too many occasions.
3) How to improve the pp effeciency. We looked great on the pp, had numerous chance yet were only 3-14. Gotta bury the puck when you get the chance.
Providence and Mass Amherst are the next test. Should be an upgrade in competition. Let's see how the team responds this weekend coming up.

The glass is at LEAST half full, folks, maybe a lot more. Encouraging weekend. Something to build on. Data to analyze and get better based on the conclusions drawn.
You misunderstand the point I am making. I am *not* referrring to the *quality* of the CHA teams, their skill level. What i *am* saying is that the ECACHL teams, for the most part but especially Cornell, are nationally known for attempting to slow the game down to a crawl with holding, grabbing, tying you up along the boards, etc. I was not saying CHA teams all stink so lets' not get excited about having tons of shots 'this' weekend.

It looks like we will have a balanced attack, if the number one line gets most of the attention, it could free things up for everyone else:
Weller Zalewski Guthrie 1g 1a
Sullivan Dodge Cayer 2g 3a
Genovy D'alvise Rutherglen 2g 7a
Willemsen Arciero Kolu 2g 0a
I am real happy for Genovy getting two goals this weekend and get a great jump out of the gate for his senior year.
Also, the defense combined for 1 goal and 5 assists.

Andy, you'd better be careful. That Cornell comment is going to get you into real trouble with some folks.

I have a question which I have been pondering for two days.
During the second game just after the second period began at Niagara, Chris Breckelmans was given a five-minute penalty for checking from behind PLUS a game misconduct. Mike Willemsen served Chris's penalty. Later in that period, we saw Chris sitting in the stands with his family and some other Golden Knights.
Here, finally, is my question. If Chris was given a game misconduct penalty, and thereby forced to leave the leave the game, what is the difference between that and being given a game disqualification?
I thought the game disqualification meant that the player could not play the rest of that particular game, AS WELL AS, not being able to play in the NEXT game.
Could someone please offer an explanation of the difference between those two terms....game misconduct and game disqualification?
It is important to have Chris in the lineup against Providence this Friday, so I hope he has been punished enough. It was very out of character for Chris to receive such a penalty as that. And with only one captain and no assistants, I had no idea who was in charge during almost two full periods.
The Friday knight game against Niagara was disappointing to say the least. Some loud and obnoxious fans continually chanted to David Leggio, and I wondered if that bothered David.
Saturday's game was considerably better. Congratulations to our five goal scorers: Shea Guthrie, Jeff Genovy, David Cayer, Mike Arciero, and Nick Dodge, AND on Friday....Chris Breckelmans, Max Kolu, and Jeff Genovy. Jeff Genovy impressed me with scoring two goals, one less than he had scored all last year. It was nice to leave Niagara University with a win.
OUR KNIGHTS WILL BE AWESOME:)

NCAA hockey officials are bound and determined to get tough on hits from behind this season. The hits, which used to be called boarding or charging penalties, now will be called checking from behind. Violators will receive an automatic 5-minute major and game misconduct.
"Anything from behind is going to be called checking from behind," said Greg Shepherd, the Western Collegiate Hockey Association supervisor of officials. "A game disqualification (for the offense) is a possibility, too."
A game disqualification forces a player to sit out the next game, as well. A game misconduct ejects a player for the rest of the ongoing game.
Hitting from behind is now a point of emphasis (http://sports.espn.go.com/ncaa/news/story?id=2184114), and a clarification was made during the most recent rule changes (http://www.ncaa.org/champadmin/icehockey/2005/rules_changes.html).
The boxscores I found, show Chris received a major and a game misconduct.

Once again, Mike, you get the credit for being an astute researcher!
I enjoyed perusing through the rule changes for college hockey. There is definitely strong evidence supporting the need for this "checking from behind" rule as no one wants to see any hockey player seriously injured.
I was most impressed by reading about the use of a review for all possible goals on a monitor...video replaying has long been necessary, given the caliber of officiating we have seen in the ECAC. That procedure entails having a video replay person in every rink to provide the replay for the official to decide whether to review the goal or not.
Onward to this weekend's games against U-Mass Amherst and Providence.
GOOD LUCK, CLARKSON GOLDEN KNIGHTS:)

The check from behind emphasis was a direct result of the Robbie Bina hit in the WCHA playoffs. The hit broke Bina's neck and was not penalized as a check from behind. The NCAA reacted to this an said "No more."
Video replay is a great idea. However, not all the rinks in the country are capable of putting a camera overhead or the other cameras necessary to give the referee the best view. It would work in Cheel, but not at Northford.

Very typical of the NCAA...always "reacting" rather than being pro-active.
