Stolen from the Jolt:

The Alpha Chi Rho fraternity (popularly known as Crow) at Clarkson will no longer be recognized for the next three years. A January incident involving serving two underage students alcohol, one of whom was hospitalized lead to a Recognition Review Panel recommendation. Alpha Chi Rho also pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of unlawfully dealing with a child and will pay small fines and perform community service. News Watch 50 is covering the story.

Well that makes 2 frats this year. TKE went by the wayside earlier this year. Is Clarkson getting too tough? Or are the penalties justified?

IMO, the punishments are more than justified. Both of those organizations (TKE and Crow) should consider themselves fortunate that nobody died. They would also do well to remember why Theta Chi hasn't existed at Clarkson since 1997. There is simply no excuse for this kind of reckless behavior, especially in these highly litigious times.

Greek organizations complain constantly about being stereotyped a la Animal House, but can actions such as this be seen as trying to break that stereotype? Lots of Greek houses do perform community service, and that's great -- but if you read the news, you see that a lot of the problems Greek houses have with communities, police, and universities seem to center around alcohol abuse.

It's really simple: if you want to use alcohol, use it responsibly and legally; if not, go dry, or cease to exist. Ideally, Greek organizations should have to be substance-free as a condition of university recognition, but I know that isn't really workable and would probably invite a hailstorm of lawsuits. Instead, dry houses should be encouraged by university administrators. You don't hear too many stories of "dry" Greek houses getting busted for hooliganism.

For those that are voluntarily dry -- keep up the good work. For those that aren't, it's something that you should seriously consider.

gosh all of this makes me feel kind of ....dated. you know, like "i remember when...TKE and Crow and Theta Chi were still around." just weird. if they can't follow the rules set down by the communities they belong to, the price has to be paid. they are no different than you or i.
